Summary: Fukuro-machi Elementary School was one of Hiroshima’s<br />

only standing buildings remaining, after the August 6, 1945 atomic blast.<br />

Converted into a temporary first aid station, people flocked to<br />

Fukuromachi in search of loved ones. In hope of getting news from their<br />

missing family members, messages of hope were left behind, written in<br />

chalk on the walls. After renovation of Fukuromachi shortly after the war,<br />

these messages were believed to have been lost forever. In 1999 however,<br />

after a section of plaster had pealed away from the wall, these messages<br />

of hope were once again revealed.<br />
