From the cellar of a Massachusetts collector, stored in ideal cellar conditions. 40. Chateau Beychevelle 1989 St. Julien, 4eme Cru Classe u: three bottom neck, two into neck 6 bottles $400-600 41. Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste 1990 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe u: all into neck, staining to one label “Along with the 1982, 2000, and 2005, the 1990 is one of those monumental Grand Puy Lacostes that you can’t have enough of. Still inky/blue/purple-colored to the rim, it boasts a gorgeously sweet, pure nose of creme de cassis, spring flowers, and a hint of wet rocks. The wine is full-bodied, plush, and expansive with impressive levels of glycerin and purity as well as an endearing texture. This 1990 is evolving at a glacial pace, but the sweetness of the tannins and low acidity ensure a delicious treat whenever a bottle is opened.” R. Parker, 96 pts. 06/09 12 bottles $1,200-1,800 42. Chateau Gruaud Larose 1989 (2 bts) (u: one bottom neck, one into neck) Chateau Haut Batailley 1989 (6 bts) Les Forts de Latour 1985 (1 bt) 9 bottles $450-700 43. Chateau La Conseillante 1989 Pomerol u: all into neck “Somewhat similar to the 1990, but slightly more structured, with more noticeable tannin and a meatier style, this is still a very perfumed, exotic, expansive, sensationally concentrated wine that should age effortlessly for another 10-15 years. In that sense, it might actually outlast the 1990, but what a pair these two wines make. The wine has a dark garnet/ruby color and fabulous aromatics of black raspberries, kirsch, licorice, and copious amounts of toasted new oak. Relatively full-bodied for a La Conseillante, with great purity, sweet tannin, but noticeable structure and muscle, this is a relatively large-scaled La Conseillante that has always been one of the top wines of the vintage.” R. Parker, 96 pts. 01/03 6 bottles $1,200-1,800 44. Chateau La Dominique 1985 St. Emilion, Grand Cru Classe u: all very top shoulder or better 12 bottles (owc) $250-350 45. Chateau Leoville Las Cases 1989 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe u: all bottom neck or better 6 bottles $750-1,100 49. Chateau Lynch Bages 1989 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe u: all very top shoulder or better “The 1989 has taken forever to shed its formidable tannins, but what a great vintage of Lynch Bages! I would rank it at the top of the pyramid although the 1990, 2000, and down the road, some of the more recent vintages such as 2005, 2009 and 2010 should come close to matching the 1989’s extraordinary concentration and undeniable aging potential. Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. Powerful and rich with some tannins still to shed at age 22, it is still a young adolescent in terms of its evolution and will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring. It should prove to be a 50 year wine.” R. Parker, 99+ pts. 08/11 12 bottles (owc) $2,400-3,600 50. Chateau Montrose 1989 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe R.
