Galardi Terra di Lavoro Roccamonfina 2004
Campania
6 bottles
$350-550
Ribera del Duero – Once home to the Spanish capital, the expansive
plan of Old Castile forges on. The baked earth dotted with trees
and vines, its steady rhythm interrupts only to skirt the occasional
languorous estate. Seemingly unencumbered by where it is going or
from where it has come, greatness here is senses more than seen. –LC
Aalto P.S. is taking its place among the top properties of Ribera del
Duero. Very concentrated and powerful, a standout in the sea of new
producers in the region. –CM
There is no separating Rioja from its wine—it hums as a region built
with knowledge gained from ancestral successes. Slopes of all angles,
heights, and soils are dedicated to the vine. Old stone wineries now
stand beside modern architectural marvels. All are eager to continue
the pace. –LC
Artadi Vina el Pison 2004
Rioja
“The 2004 El Pison stands out from its peers. It has a deeper color
than the 2007 with a splendid nose that jumps from the glass. Notes of
espresso, balsamic, Asian spices, pain grille, mineral, and black cherry
lead to a velvety, mouth-filling, deep wine that effortlessly combines
elegance with power. It should easily drink well for another 30-40 years.
It simply does not get any better.” J. Miller for R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/10
The Priorat…Spain’s otherworldly vinous frontier. Staring at the craggy
slopes of dry baked earth, it’s a wonder that vines can survive, indeed
thrive. –LC
Cal Pla Planots Mas d’en Compte 2005
Priorat
“The 2005 Mas d’En Compte Planots is 50% Garnacha and 50%
Carinena from 100+-year-old vines aged in new French oak for 16
months. Purple-colored, the nose is more fruit confit than spice cabinet
along with notes of wild blueberry and blackberry. This is followed
by a ripe, totally hedonistic wine with extreme length and a decade
of cellaring potential. While it will be hard to resist young, patient
purchasers will be well rewarded.” J. Miller for R. Parker, 98 pts. 02/08
6 bottles (owc)
