Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: ten bottom neck or better, two very top shoulder, label staining and some tissue adherence, some capsule corrosion, light bin soil “This is a denser version of the 1990 that stylistically reminds me of what the young 1959 probably tasted like. Still backward with a deep ruby/plum color revealing only a touch of lightening at the edge, the wine offers up an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs, smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and earth. The gorgeous aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low acidity. With 6-8 hours decanting in a closed decanter, it will offer beautiful drinking, but it needs another 5-8 years to reach full maturity. It is capable of lasting 50-60 years. This classic Lafite is not as fat and concentrated as the 1982 Latour, nor as complex or concentrated as the 1982 Mouton Rothschild, but it is a winner all the same.” R. Parker, 97+ pts. 06/09 12 bottles $35,000-50,000 201. Chateau Margaux 1971 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: three very top shoulder, three top shoulder, some capsule corrosion, slight glue striping 6 bottles $350-500 205. Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1945 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: two high shoulder, two mid shoulder, one label mostly missing, all labels deteriorating and parts missing, heavy bin soil, some tissue adherence “A consistent 100-point wine (only because my point scale stops at that number), the 1945 Mouton-Rothschild is truly one of the immortal wines of the century. This wine is easily identifiable because of its remarkably exotic, over-ripe, sweet nose of black fruits, coffee, tobacco, mocha, and Asian spices. It is an extraordinarily dense, opulent, and rich wine, with layers of creamy fruit, behaving more like a 1947 Pomerol than a structured, powerful, and tannic 1945. The wine finishes with a 60+ second display of ripe fruit, extract, and sweet tannin. This remarkably youthful wine (only light amber at the edge) is mindboggling! Will it last another 50 years” R. Parker, 100 pts. 01/98 4 bottles $16,000-24,000 206. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1949 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: bottom neck, heavy bin soil 1 bottle $1,200-1,800 207.
