The summer holidays are nearly upon us and that
means come rain or shine, you’ve got to keep the kids
entertained somehow. Instead of struggling to keep
them out of trouble at home, why not consider making
their leisure time fun and educational, with some of
the region’s best days out.
The National Space Centre, in Leicester, offers
exciting exhibitions and an awe-inspiring visit. The
six differently themed areas provide everything from
space capsules, satellites and rockets, to interactive
experiences. As well as being a great, fun place
to explore, visitors can also learn all about the
universe, planets and space travel, meaning kids will
learn something whilst they enjoy themselves.
If you’re trying to find fun things to do at home, drag the kids
away from the TV and get them experimenting with something new. Let them get their hands
dirty in the kitchen baking cakes and making flapjacks. You can even get them involved in
the garden, growing not only plants and flowers, but vegetables as well.
Alternatively, if you run a youth group, why not enlist the services of the Journey Man.
Providing tales from around the globe, this fun and educational character can help kids get
involved in the storytelling process, whilst learning all about other countries and cultures.

Now the warm weather is upon us, it’s the
perfect time to get out and about in the
great British countryside. So, ditch the games
consoles, television and the internet and go
and explore some of the country’s glorious
green areas.
If you’re planning a holiday this summer then
why not make it a green one. Choosing a
caravanning break over a foreign package
holiday will not only be kinder on your pocket
this year, it’ll also help to reduce you carbon
footprint. A single short haul flight to Europe
produces a whopping 600,000kg of C0²,

travel by public transport, you’ll reduce your

The devastating affect of the credit crunch
means there’ll be many people who simply
cannot afford to take a summer holiday this
year, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss
out; just enjoy some great days out instead.
Brixworth Country Park, overlooking the
Pitsford Reservoir in Northamptonshire,

Man
Enjoy a unique and inspiring experience, marvel
at tales from around the world and explore your
own imagination with the help of the Journey
Man, winner of our Certificate of Recognition for
Unique Educational Services.
The Journey Man, constructed from the
imagination of Johnny Gillett, is a world-travelled
mime artist, storyteller, drama teacher and youth
worker. Having spent many years exploring
different countries and cultures, Johnny made his
home in Cheshire two years ago, where he set
about transforming his experiences into drama
workshops and storytelling programmes that
children of all ages could enjoy.
The verbal and visual practitioner, who has
become a big hit in schools across the country,
tailors workshops and programmes to coincide
with children’s Core Learning, covering a
whole host of cultures and time periods. The
Journey Man is able to tell stories relating to
Aboriginal Australia, the Caribbean, Japan and
New Zealand to name but a few, whilst drama
workshops can be tailored around subjects such
as Aztecs, Vikings and Romans. The workshops
encourage children to explore different angles of
stories, create their own stories and characters
using various techniques, as well as performing
their creations.
Johnny says: “Children always react really
positively to the experience. I think part of that
is because everyone loves a good story and
also because they get to be part of that story,
exploring ideas and the way characters act,
as well as putting forward their own ideas. The
workshops are interactive, allowing children the
opportunity to draw on their own imagination.
It also encourages them to become good
listeners.”
With 20 years teaching experience, Johnny
has the skills and training to adapt to teaching
different children. Working as a solo artist also
allows him the flexibility to adapt to different
time scales and school routines, and a range of
workshops can easily be created and adapted for
children aged three to 18.
When organising workshops for older children,
Johnny focuses on the issues and metaphors
within stories, encouraging discussions about
how characters will overcome these challenges.
An emphasis on teamwork and the importance of
being able to work well alongside others is also a
popular element of the programme.
On receiving his Certificate, Johnny says: “I’m
so pleased that Aspire recognise my workshops
offer something a little different and I’m delighted
