3.1.2 Scheduled and Charter Traffic
Scheduled, charter, air passenger and cargo
transportation account for the majority of air
services at EIA. As of 2010, 15 scheduled airlines
and seven major charter operators serve Edmonton
International Airport, providing non-stop service
to 28 destinations in Canada, 11 destinations in the
United States and 15 international destinations.
Charter operations using commercial passenger
jets such as Boeing 737 or larger, bound for
international and transborder destinations,
generally operate seasonally. The majority of
these connections are made in the winter charter
season, taking passengers to various southern US and
Caribbean destinations (Exhibit 3.2).
As Canada’s prime gateway to the north, EIA
regularly serves 11 northern communities and
is growing as a regional hub. As the preferred
gateway serving Canada’s energy industry, EIA
supports northern business partners and their
communities in the development of resources such
as oil (both conventional and oil sands) and a host
of other commodities including diamonds, gold,
uranium.
Twenty-two scheduled and charter air carriers
serve Edmonton International Airport, providing
services which link the airport with major Canadian,
US and international destinations. Three national
carriers – Air Canada, Westjet and Air Canada Jazz,
along with regional domestic carriers Air North,
Canadian North, First Air and Central Mountain
Air, and charter carriers provide services to link
Edmonton with key destinations in Canada and the
US. In addition, charter carriers such as Air Transat,
Canjet, Sunwing, Enerjet, Swanberg Air, Integra Air,
and Northwestern Air Lease provide charter flights
to Northern Alberta communities and Caribbean
sunspots. Transborder air carriers link the airport
with major hub cities in the US including Alaska
Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Horizon
Air, United Express and US Airways. London –
Heathrow is served by an Air Canada Boeing
767-300ER.
