These facilities are operated by a number of
companies including airlines and ground service
companies. Currently, vacuum sweeper trucks are
used to collect residual glycol from the de-icing
pads. The recovered glycol is then transported to
a holding tank at the glycol disposal facility. The
holding tank has a gas-fired burner to melt snow
and ice. The water-glycol solution is then tricklefed
into the sanitary sewer line that feeds into
the Capital Region Sewage Commission System
(CRSCS). Plans are underway to have a single
de-icing services provider at the airport. EIA will
work with the new service provider to investigate
alternate glycol disposal methods such as recycling
and re-use of spent glycol or other means of
disposal that would be more environmentally
friendly and less costly.
To address safety and environmental concerns,
it is desirable to have a de-icing facility close
to departure runways and to have the ability to
manage used de-icing fluids left on apron surfaces.
Such a facility would reduce the time between
de-icing and take-off and maximize de-icing
capacity. It is intended that the future development
of de-icing facilities will include consolidation
as shown in Exhibit 5.16. The location and sizing
of the Centralized De-icing Facilities (CDF) will
be determined by the peak period demand and
phasing of the third runway and Port Alberta
developments. The CDF is the preferred site for
when the third runway is constructed at EIA.
