Gradual increases are expected as business and
general aviation traffic shift from ECCA. For this
gradual master plan, 2014 is assumed to be a pivotal
year for increase in aircraft movements into Edmonton
International Airport as traffic transfers from ECCA.
Additional business aviation traffic is expected to be
handled at the expanded apron areas at EIA.
With the expected growth in air carrier, air cargo and
business aviation activities at EIA, the total number
of aircraft movements is estimated to reach 206,856
in 2020 and 279,313 in 2035 (Exhibit 3.14 and 3.14A).
3.3.3 Air Cargo Demand
Air cargo forecasts are normally prepared
correlating cargo activity with an economic variable
such as Gross Domestic Product. In addition, the
impact of Edmonton ‘regional multi-modal’ cargo
development initiatives under the Port Alberta
Development Plan have been incorporated in
the air cargo forecasts for EIA (Exhibit 3.15). The
resulting cargo forecasts project overall growth
of 4.6 per cent per year in the long term after the
modest increase of one to three per cent in the
early years (2010-2013).
The forecast for air cargo activities is displayed in a
range (Exhibit 3.16).
3.3.3.1 Port Alberta – Cargo at a Single
Point
Port Alberta is staged to become the new gateway
for cargo combining air, rail and road transportation
infrastructure at a single point.
