It was also found that most of the Heads of Institution have been on their current post/rank for three to eight years. This period has given them adequate experience on the operation of SIWES in their Institutions. 4.5.4 Year SIWES Commenced Further, all but three of the Institutions in the study commenced participation since its establishment by 1980. Only one commenced SIWES between 2000 and now. So, most Institutions have had decades of experience in participating in SIWES. 46
CHAPTER FIVE ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURES AND FUNDING 5.1 Introduction Administrative organs for the operation and funding of the Scheme are examined in terms of structures in Institutions, pre and post training activities, methods of assessing Students' performance, placement while on attachment, supervision, payment of SIWES allowances and welfare services. a factor that affected maximal performance in SIWES by some Coordinators as reported by one Institution-based Coordinator: Career prospects for staff in SIWES Units have not been very favourable... in many Institutions where things are not going well, (it) is due to lack of a career structure to motivate people to stay in the structure. Where Institutions bring persons in charge as an academic, remove and put someone else does not augur well for continuity. The new people are not conversant with the past problems (Institution- based SIWES Coordinator, South West Zone). 5.2. S I W E S S t r u c t u r e s i n Institutions Information on the types of structure a v a i l a b l e i n I n s t i t u t i o n s (administrative and infrastructural) to enhance the performance of SIWES. Most Institutions have SIWES Units with a Coordinator to oversee the day to day operations of the Unit. A few Institutions have full-fledged Centres, with Directors and career staff. However, some of the Institutions deploy Academic staff to run the Units for some time and later replace them after some stipulated period. The lack of career prospects was identified as Heads of Institution interviewed, reported that they support SIWES administratively, in compliance with Government Policy on the Scheme.
