The waters off the South East<br />

of Scotland are set to become<br />

an European hot spot for<br />

offshore renewables and Royal<br />

HaskoningDHV’s team, based in<br />

Edinburgh and Glasgow, are a key<br />

part of this drive.<br />

Offshore wind energy support<br />

Royal HaskoningDHV, the international<br />

engineering and environmental consulting<br />

firm have nine offices in the UK. Working<br />

out of their Edinburgh and Glasgow offices<br />

Royal HaskoningDHV is supporting several<br />

of the largest offshore wind developments<br />

in the UK. The offshore applications for<br />

the first phase, of over 1GW of offshore<br />

wind for the Firth of Forth Round Three<br />

Zone being developed by Seagreen <strong>Wind</strong><br />

<strong>Energy</strong> (a joint venture between SSE and<br />

Fluor Limited) has recently been submitted<br />

to the Scottish Government.<br />

such a large site off the coast of Angus<br />

and Fife was a real challenge. This is<br />

one of largest infrastructure projects<br />

planned in Scotland, spanning the wind<br />

20km inland<br />

to Tealing in<br />

Angus. As you<br />

can imagine<br />

there have been<br />

a number of<br />

environmental<br />

and consenting<br />

Leading consultancy in Scotland<br />

Scotland’s charge towards predicable<br />

energy from the sea is being led from<br />

many firms in South East Scotland. Royal<br />

HaskoningDHV are one of Scotland’s<br />

leading consultancies supporting the wave<br />

and tidal boom across Scotland. Frank<br />

Director leading many of these projects<br />

College invests<br />

in renewable<br />

future<br />

With the renewables industry<br />

predicted to generate not just energy<br />

but £100billion over the next 10 years,<br />

Dundee College is taking steps to<br />

ensure people have the skills to fill the<br />

jobs needed to maintain this business.<br />

Skills shortage<br />

Having already identified a skills shortage<br />

in the industry, the college committed to<br />

ensure the infrastructure needed, in terms<br />

of the training and expertise, is in place to<br />

encourage growth in this industry in the city.<br />

Sustainable Industries Institute<br />

Dundee College has launched SI2 –<br />

the Sustainable Industries Institute, by<br />

merging the expertise to be found in the<br />

construction, engineering and science<br />

departments.<br />

“We see our commitment to the<br />

renewable energy as being vital to both<br />

the growth of the industry<br />

and the future of certain<br />

trades and crafts in this<br />

area,” said Dr David Gourley,<br />

director of curriculum<br />

development with SI2.<br />

“We already have training<br />

facilities for welding and<br />

fabrication – two crafts<br />

which have been supporting<br />

the North Sea oil and gas<br />

industry since the very<br />

first rigs were towed to<br />

the Forties and Brent fields in the early<br />

1970s.<br />

“These skills are equally essential for the<br />

installation and maintenance of wind<br />

turbines.<br />

“This area is set to be at the centre of<br />

renewable energy with offshore windturbines<br />

creating employment in the near<br />

future.”<br />

Arc centre of excellence<br />

In November Dundee College launched<br />

the Arc, a £500,000 centre of excellence<br />

for engineering, its Kingsway Campus.<br />

The Arc offers a capacity to accommodate<br />

40 welding students.<br />

Reaching out<br />

Dundee College is also carrying the<br />

renewables message beyond its own<br />

students.<br />

At a recent Engineering 4 Life event, local<br />

S3 school pupils were introduced to a<br />

series of technologies connected with the<br />

renewables industry including calculating<br />

optimum performance of wind turbines –<br />

using table-top models.<br />
