old. The brothers had been friends and business partners their entire adult lives. With his death, Christ now lived alone in his apartment in Elmwood. Christ would live 15 more years before becoming too ill; when he was taken to Menomonie. Before Christ passed away, he confided in his nephew, Earl Vanasse, regarding his financial affairs. “The family later learned the two men owned a greater portion of St. Paul, Minnesota in real estate. Not only that, cream cans were lowered into their backyard containing coins, including many gold coins. All of this wealth was managed by an attorney at that point and divided among living relatives, one of whom was my mother. At the time she received it, she needed that security and considered it a blessing.” 19 Charles Vanasse would visit Christ often, “When I used to visit Christ with my father, he lived in this building. Christ wearing his galoshes was photographed inside. I remember being inside here [his apartment)]more clearly than in the store, which was no longer open for business at the time.” 21 carried. In 1942 he closed the store with the stock on hand, intact, and retired. In 1946 the entire stock and building were sold to William Bergemen and Oscar Chillstrom. They sold the stock at a sale which gained nation-wide publicity because so much of the stock was pre-war, hard to get – items. Mr. Nordrum remained in good health despite his advanced years until about a year ago. Last Friday he was taken to Memorial hospital and passed away the following morning at the age of 92 years. Two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death. Left to mourn his passing, are a brother, Samuel of Maple Valley, Washington and a sister, Nettie Ellison of Shelton, Washington, besides a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 7 th , at the Elmwood Methodist Church, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Otas M. Botts officiating. Internment was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Spring Valley.” 27 Neither man married. Christ died on the 8 th of March 1957. 4 Both brothers were buried in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. 47 Christ and Hans’ names are penciled in his Bible. It was given to Angus Cummings Ellison on a visit to Wisconsin during the 50’s. It is now with his widow, Verna Ellison, in Kamilche, Washington (2007). His obituary reads, “Chris Nordrum, one of Elmwood’s early business men, died May 4 at Memorial hospital in Menomonie. Mr. Nordrum was born in Norway on April 27, 1865, the son of John and Mary Nordrum. He came to the United States in 1870 with his parents and settled in the town of Eau Galle where they remained for a year before moving to a farm northwest of Spring Valley. He grew to young manhood in that community and was employed on farms until 1889. At that time he went into the clothing and grocery business in Spring Valley, Which he operated until 1905. In 1906 he and his brother, Hans, opened the Nordrum Brothers Store in Elmwood. It was the largest store of it’s kind for may years and was well-known for both the quantity and quality of goods which was 34

The photographer would have been standing near John D. Francisco’s house, who was the first settler in Spring Valley, in that section of town. Frank Curtis, another very early settler on the east side of town, is pictured in the buggy. The Nordrums, Hans and Christ came to Spring Valley about 1892 and built the pictured store. After being exposed to the adjacent Eau Galle River’s flood waters too many times, they left for a safer location in Elmwood in 1905. By 1910, Frank Curtis was doing a general merchandise business in this store.
