The demands:
reducing space requirements and costs
Strand was searching for a suitable and cost efficient
solution for a dimming system’s energy supply and
controller. The system that Strand Lighting had been
using to-date required bus bars for connecting dimmers
to the power controllers, which entailed a good deal of
space and additioned weight. A solution was needed that
reduced space requirements and maintenance input, while
ensuring that the system would run smoothly and without
interruptions. Reducing the number of components was an
obvious option.
The solution that HARTING implemented for Strand Lighting
is based on the Han® series modular connection technology,
together with its associated cables. And the plain figures
reflect the concept’s impressive success: The compact
Han® C module managed the required power of 40 amperes,
while pushing system weight down from approximately
67.5 kg to a mere 18 kg. The unit‘s total height was reduced
from approximately 2.45 m to just 1.22 m. Consequently,
the equipment is now far more easy to transport – and
can even be used as a table-top unit. Other advantages
of the solution include faster setup and dismantling,
reduced labor costs and increased system reliability. The
solution has also significantly reduced maintenance costs
and downtimes. And the more compact dimensions spell
additional savings in transport and storage costs.
HARTING Solution for Strand Lighting
HARTING assembled various products to carry out this
project: Han-Modular® frame, 16 B (4 modules), Han® C
Module, 40 A/1000 V, 10 mm 2 , axial connection,
3 contacts, male and female inserts, Han® DD Module,
10 A/250 V, crimp connection, 12 contacts, male and
female inserts.
The dimmer modules are connected to the power control
system with blind-mate technology, resulting in greater
flexibility, particularly for simple replacements of dimmer
modules for future equipment options or in maintenance
or repair work. The space-saving engineering has a direct

impact on the control room: a lighter and smaller system
contributes to reduced overall operating costs. The lower
weight not only delivers crucial material savings, but also
cuts transport costs and allows twice as many dimmers to
be installed in only half the space.
