72 LOGIA small group of people who clamored for a new pastor; someone who would bring in new families, get church programs running again, put out a more interesting newsletter, and bring back some of those generous donors who had drifted away. At that point, denominational staff suggested a consultation process. But the congregation insisted that nothing was wrong with them. Those fancy high-priced consultants with their newsprint and psychobabble Not for them! They just needed to get the right pastor in there, someone who would inspire them. They only wanted the denomination to get them some good names for their search process, not the kind of weak pastors they had seen before. Why did the denomination keep suggesting their inadequate clergy to them The bishop shook his head again as he eased his car out of the parking lot. This place was a “clergy-killer.” They seemed like nice people. They sounded sincere. One at a time, the members were talented, gracious, and bright. But when they got together in a group, they alternated between hopelessness and a state of organizational chaos that made every decision, however small, a battle of wills. Why do some congregations seem to chew up and spit out their clergy And why do some congregations persist in self-defeating patterns that endure over several pastorates There are many subtle and complex reasons why congregations are “clergy-killers” or seem to suffer from tenacious patterns of organizational chaos. The surrounding community may have experienced a significant transition (e.g. flood, fire), possibly abrupt and traumatic. It may be that the congregation itself was born in anger, a breakaway group that had left to establish itself in protest. Perhaps a powerful family’s iron grip on the church has stifled its creativity. There may have been denominational upheavals that left the congregation depleted and battle weary. A too-ambitious project may have failed, leaving people embarrassed or burned out. Or patterns of conflict avoidance may have settled in, causing an accumulation of bad feelings that festered under a veneer of artificial congeniality. When these factors are part of the congregation’s history, people will usually be able to point to them and discuss them without much anxiety. But for some congregations, a pattern of organizational distress and anticlericalism is rooted in a painful, unacknowledged secret that has been hovering invisibly within the congregation. Like radioactive waste, the toxin of the secret infects the organization, sapping energy, distorting perceptions, and scrambling normal life processes. Like radioactive waste the toxin works at an imperceptible level, showing its effects cumulatively and over the long term. And like radioactive waste, it eludes detection until someone with astute diagnostic skills (and more than a little courage) considers the possibility that is so hard to talk about— that there is a history of sexual misconduct that was never acknowledged, never resolved.
