Summer Vacation Camps for Kids ages 5 to 12 JUL 08 through 12 JUL 15 through 19 Signs, Symbols, Pop! “Great minds think alike” – and the visual collaboration of great creative minds can produce some of the best art ever! Join us this week as we use our Art Center faculty as Artists-in- Residence, where they will lead our campers in collaborating to create an exciting visual response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of artist Robert Indiana’s painting, “Decade : Autoportrait 1963.” The work produced this week by the campers will be on display in a public exhibition. Posterize It As the Poster Mania! exhibition at the Currier vividly demonstrates, the rise of the poster as a means of promotion ultimately created bold, graphic and dramatic pieces of art that people wanted to own for its own sake. This week, each group of students will be working on a collaborative “Art Center Seasons” poster project guided by Graphic Artist and Illustrator Neva Cole. The works created will be printed and put on display in the Museum’s Community Gallery and will function as seasonal covers to the Art Center brochure for the upcoming calendar year! The Art Center hosts six week-long Vacation Art Camps for children during the summer school vacation holidays. This program is popular with families who are seeking an enrichment experience for their children while school is out of session. All camps include trips to the Currier Museum. Choose a theme week that inspires you and have fun! Children aged 6 to 14 (1st grade+) register for a full day, from 9 am–3 pm. 5 and 6 year olds (Kindergarten – 1st Grade) have the option of mornings only, from 9 am-noon. Full Day Tuition: $270 Half Day Tuition: $160 After Camp Care is available from 3–4:30 pm for an additional $30 JUL 22 through 26 JUL 29 through AUG 02 Manch-Vegas Madness There’s no place like home, and sometimes it takes the eye and creativity of an artist to show others what a place is like. A group of energized, artistic and highly inspired teens from the Currier Art Center did just that, and it’s been the mural on the outside of the Manchester Boys & Girls Club for over seven years! Other artists like Charles Sheeler and Ann Marie Kenny have used Manchester’s mills as the genesis for their portrayals of “our town”. Join us this week as we investigate the different faces of Manchester and surrounding towns, and create art to show the world what we’re all about! Picture This When we set out to define what an illustration is we came up with so many answers that we had to stop because we ran out of time! An illustration tells a story, gives information, clarifies something, defines a statement… This week we’ll be creating art that explores the many different styles of illustration and illustrators. We’ll encourage you to illustrate your own story by looking at the art of Maurice Sendak, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, Winslow Homer, Howard Pyle and Maxfield Parrish to name just some of the artists that inspire us! AUG 05 through 09 AUG 12 through 16 Wild Thing! with special “GUESTS” from the Massabesic Audobon Center Even if you live in the city, you’re surrounded by nature – and in a state like New Hampshire, which is largely rural, a “wild thing” is usually just steps away. This week we’ll take a walk on the wild side and draw, paint, print and sculpt art that reflects the natural world around us. Our emphasis will be on using the power of art to draw attention to the animals and insects of New Hampshire, especially those that are vulnerable. Now You See It - Now You Don’t Is Clark Kent the reality or Superman Is Oz – and not Kansas the only place that’s in color Are the Good Witch and the Bad Witch two sides of the same person We’re not sure if we’ll answer all these questions, but over the course of this week we’ll have a blast exploring how artists transform everyday reality into alternate visions, universes and sometimes points of view! 12 SUMMER JULY 8 - AUGUST 16
Weekly Classes for Preschoolers Wednesday Mornings: Jul 17 - Aug 14 Clay Sampler Instructor: Rachel Montroy 9 am–3 pm $320, Maximum 8 students This is a great workshop for anyone who loves working with clay. Each day will begin with the potter’s wheel in the morning and then with handbuilding in the afternoon. Projects will include different types of pottery such as cups, bowls and plates. We will also make sculpture, including sculpting from life and your imagination! Projects will be glazed and fired. Bring a lunch. Ages 3 & 4 Ages 4 - 6 New Masters! Instructor: Corie Lyford Wed. 9:30-10:15 am $60, Maximum 10 children/parent(s) Ages: 3 & 4 years (accompanied by parent) Is your child ready for their first art room experience At 3 years of age, children are ready and eager to get messy with art. With guidance from an instructor, parents and their children will together explore the imaginative regions of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpting. Playfully explore color, shape, form and texture, as well as share a wonderful appreciation of art. ABC’s of Art Instructor: Corie Lyford Wed. 10:45-11:45 am $75, Maximum 10 students ABC’s of Art is a multimedia class designed to inspire a young student’s imagination and interest in art. Lessons include drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, clay and sculpture. Foster a level of confidence and a sense of independence in your child, while increasing their skill level in accordance with their age and developmental stage. Artventures! for Preteens ages 12 to 15 One-Week Intensive Day Classes ArtVentures! for Preteens aims to meet the needs of our preteen students who are looking for learning opportunities that are challenging and fun. These classes are designed to introduce students to a variety of disciplines that are taught at the Art Center including drawing, painting, weaving, photography, cartooning, jewelry making and pottery. JUL 08 through 12 Monday – Friday: 9 am–noon, 1–4 pm, or 9 am–3 pm Session 1 Animal Mosaics Instructor: Patti Benson 9 am–noon $225, Maximum 8 students Study and practice the ancient art of mosaics. Apply your own dynamic visual ideas to the art of mosaics while incorporating traditional glass pieces and handmade clay elements into your own animal mosaic panel. Be inspired by a visit to the Currier Museum’s interior mosaic courtyard and indoor Winter Garden Café. JUL 15 through 19 Felting - Come Get Your Wool On! Instructor: Rebecca Davison 1–4 pm $270, Maximum 8 students Enter the world of felt and be amazed by the endless possibilities of this natural fiber. Looking at technique and color this class will cover needle, wet and Nuno felting. Projects will be a mixture of art and wearable pieces with the opportunity of combining and building upon techniques learned through the week. If you want fun, you want felt! Session 2 Black and White Photography for Preteens Instructor: Pam Difloures 9 am-noon $250, Maximum 6 students Learn the basics of traditional black and white photography in this introductory course for middle school students. Subjects include: the proper use of a 35mm camera, the study of design elements and principles, the creation of strong compositions and the production of your own prints. Rental cameras are available upon request for an additional $15 Sculpture for Preteens Instructor: Pam Difloures 1–4 pm $225, Maximum 8 students Students will use a variety of mixed media including paper mache, clay, wood, plaster, and recycled materials. Inspired by the abstract and figurative sculptures on the Currier campus students will create abstract and realistic sculptures on a larger scale. JULY 8 - AUGUST 16 SUMMER 13
