Mice to Monsters:<br />

Cartooning for Kids<br />

Animals, monsters and humans are<br />

a few <strong>of</strong> the uniquely interesting<br />

characters we’ll explore on this zany<br />

ride <strong>of</strong> imagination and creativity! The<br />

class will explore how learning to draw<br />

“realistically” can be warped in just<br />

the right way to craft inventive cartoon<br />

characters. Open to beginning drawing<br />

students, as well as young cartoonists.<br />

Foundations in Fibers: Basics<br />

and Beyond<br />

Students will take art-making to a<br />

whole new level by exploring how fibers<br />

can transform drawing, painting and<br />

sculpture into exciting new creations!<br />

We will begin with an introduction to a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> fiber media including weaving,<br />

dyeing and felting and then move into an<br />

exploration <strong>of</strong> 2D and 3D projects, using<br />

fibers in unique and innovative ways. This<br />

is an ideal class for first-time students, as<br />

well as those who have previously taken<br />

classes in other media.<br />

Drawing for Kids<br />

Students will learn the elements <strong>of</strong> tone,<br />

texture and line, while using a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

dry and wet media including graphite,<br />

charcoal, pastel, watercolor and ink.<br />

This course is perfect for those young<br />

students who want to gain experience<br />

in the art <strong>of</strong> drawing, while working at a<br />

beginner’s level on projects suitable for<br />

young students.<br />

Expressive Landscapes!<br />

Swirling starry skies, reflective rivers and<br />

majestic mountains are all a part <strong>of</strong> this<br />

exiting class! We will explore the beauty<br />

<strong>of</strong> the natural world around us through<br />

the eyes <strong>of</strong> landscape painters such as<br />

O’Keeffe, Parrish, Monet and Van Gogh.<br />

As we explore texture and light in master<br />

artists’ work, we will create our very own<br />

masterpieces. Acrylics, watercolor and<br />

mixed media will all be explored in this<br />

nature inspired approach to the basics <strong>of</strong><br />

painting.<br />

Sculpture for Kids<br />

Make bigger and more inventive<br />

sculptures using a variety <strong>of</strong> media<br />

including clay, paper mache,<br />

wood, wire and recycled materials.<br />

Figurative and abstract sculpture will<br />

be introduced so that students can<br />

exercise their imaginations.<br />

Collage for Kids<br />

Be inspired by artists such as Pablo<br />

Picasso, Faith Ringgold and Eric Carle<br />

as students explore the dynamic world<br />

<strong>of</strong> collage. Working from fine arts and<br />

illustration our young artists will work<br />

large and small, and in book form, to<br />

create a diverse range <strong>of</strong> beautiful and<br />

whimsical objects using hand-painted<br />

papers, construction paper, newsprint<br />

and so much more.<br />

Drawing in the Galleries<br />

for Kids<br />

Working directly from masterworks in<br />

the <strong>Currier</strong>’s galleries, students will<br />

learn the elements <strong>of</strong> tone, texture<br />

and line, while using graphite media.<br />

Additionally, students will explore other<br />

media including charcoal, pastel and<br />

watercolor in a museum classroom.<br />

Creative Clay Sculpture<br />

Instructor: Pam Difloures<br />

Weds. 3:45-5:15 pm<br />

$100, Maximum 8 students<br />

Combine slab, coil building and press<br />

molding techniques to create a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> ambitious clay sculptures, ranging<br />

from the figurative to the abstract.<br />

Design a mosaic tile mural, carve<br />

gargoyles from blocks <strong>of</strong> clay and<br />

build sculptural slab vessels! Learn<br />

about different glazing techniques and<br />

surface treatments.<br />

Painting Big! for Kids<br />

For those young artists who are<br />

inspired to paint big, this is the<br />

perfect class for you! Our young<br />

artists will be painting on stretched<br />

canvases and large sheets <strong>of</strong> primed<br />

canvas, tacked to the wall, producing<br />

a variety <strong>of</strong> big paintings in tempera<br />

and acrylic inspired by abstract and<br />

representational paintings from the<br />

<strong>Currier</strong> Collection.<br />

Wire Sculpture<br />

Instructor: Pam Difloures<br />

Sat. 11 am-12:15 pm<br />

$115, Maximum 8 students<br />

This class will engage in making<br />

abstract and realistic works <strong>of</strong> art,<br />

using weaving, bending, coiling,<br />

twisting, braiding and much more.<br />

Students will be inspired by the<br />

“Calder Circus,” wire basketry and<br />

vessel making. Students will work<br />

principally with wire and other media<br />

such as colored tissue paper, beads,<br />

strips <strong>of</strong> metal to create inventive and<br />

original works <strong>of</strong> art.<br />

Home-school:<br />

Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong><br />

Home-schooled students will learn<br />

the fundamental principles <strong>of</strong> art in<br />

this fun class! Drawing, painting,<br />

printmaking and 3-D projects will<br />

encourage kids to get messy while<br />

also learning about great works <strong>of</strong><br />

art, and the lives <strong>of</strong> artists. Learn<br />

the joys <strong>of</strong> art-making as well as art<br />

appreciation!<br />
