SPRING PROGRAM: MAY 6 - JUNE 10 The Art Center Spring 2013 Program offers art classes for students of all ages and abilities. Art Foundations for Children provides classroom art experiences for children from ages 3 to 12 through a multimedia approach, while ArtVentures for Preteens! and Art School for Teens and Adults concentrate on the needs of older students through an emphasis on specific disciplines and materials. The Art Center is committed to quality educational opportunities, therefore professional artists and art educators provide instruction for all of these courses with an emphasis on small classroom situations and personalized instruction. Ages 3 & 4 Art Foundations for Kids ages 3 to 12 Welcome to the Art Center program for youth art. These courses introduce young students to a wide range of ideas and approaches to art-making. Students in the youth program have the opportunity to grow into and matriculate through the curriculum. With the guidance of our faculty, students work from the inspiration of themes in the history of art as well as selected objects from the renowned Currier Museum of Art collection. Instructor: Corie Lyford Wed. 9:30-10:15 am $80, Maximum 8 children/parent(s) Ages: 3 & 4 years (accompanied by parent) Is your child ready for their first art experience At 3 years of age children are ready and eager to get messy with art. With the guidance of our instructor, parents and their children will together explore the imaginative regions of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpting. Parents and children will playfully explore color, shape, form and texture, as well as share a wonderful appreciation of art. Ages 4 - 6 Ages 4 - 6 Ages 6 - 8 All about Animals Instructor: Corie Lyford Wed. 10:45-11:45 am $80, Maximum 10 students This multimedia class will explore the animal kingdom, everything from cats and dogs to zebras and elephants. We will learn about color, form and texture, using a variety of materials to create paintings, collages, sculptures and more, with animals as our inspiration. Birds, Bees and Butterflies! Instructor:Amy Croteau Sat. 9:30-10:30 am $80, Maximum 10 students Discover the world of small flying things! Through observation, storytelling and creative experimentation, our students will investigate the natural world with a particular focus on birds and insects. Drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture will be among the many forms of art explored. Clay for Kids Instructor: Pam Difloures Mon. 3:45-5:15 pm $115, Maximum 8 students In this introductory class students will learn a variety of hand-building techniques, such as pinch, coil and slab construction. Projects will consist of sculptures, tiles, coil pots and slab vessels. Let your imagination be your guide as you experiment with surface treatments, texture and a variety of glazing applications including working with wax resist. Ages 6 - 8 Ages 6 - 8 Draw, Paint and Print! Instructor: June Latti Wed. 3:45-5 pm $100, Maximum 12 students Try your child’s hand at all the 2D arts. Starting with drawing, we’ll develop your child’s skills of drawing from observation. Moving to paint, your child will explore the elements of expression using bold color on a large scale. Finally, end the term with dynamic multi-colored prints. This class has something for everyone! New! Made in the USA! Instructor: Nancy Craig Thurs. 4-5:15 pm $100, Maximum 10 students This multi-media class will focus on and celebrate the art of American artists who have created bright and LIVELY artwork over the last 50 years! The artists we’ll focus on include many from the Currier collections, such as the flags of Jasper Johns, the story quilts of Faith Ringgold, colorfully painted mosaics of Sol Lewitt, and the Currier’s signature Mark DiSuvero sculpture. 6 Ages 4 - 6 ABC’s of Art Instructor: Amy Croteau Mon. 4-5 pm $80, Maximum 10 students A multimedia class designed to inspire a young student’s imagination and interest in art. Lessons include drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, clay and sculpture. Foster confidence and independence in your child, while increasing their skill level in accordance with their age and developmental stage. Ages 6- 8 SPRING MAY 6-June 10 Gardens, Flowers and Fruit Instructor: Monique Staples Tues. 4-5 pm $80, Maximum 10 students Paint and sculpt your favorite gardens, flowers and fruit using tempera, watercolor, wire, paper mache and other media. Our young artists will be inspired by great art related to the still-life and gardens while they explore paint and sculpture in this lively course for young artists. Ages 6 - 8 Art and Children’s Literature Instructor: Jennifer Silva Sat. 10-11:15 am $100, Maximum 12 students In this multimedia class students will be introduced to the images and stories of great children’s literature artists and authors such as Eric Carles, Leo Leonni, and Esphyr Slobodkina, among many. Each week we will focus on creating art inspired by these stories resulting in an original book by each child at the end of the term..
Ages 7 - 10 Ages 7 - 10 Ages 7 - 10 Ages 7 - 10 Mice to Monsters: Cartooning for Kids Instructor: Jerry Holbert Mon. 3:45-5 pm $100, Maximum 12 students Animals, monsters and humans are a few of the uniquely interesting characters we’ll explore on this zany ride of imagination and creativity! The class will explore how learning to draw “realistically” can be warped in just the right way to craft inventive cartoon characters. Open to beginning drawing students, as well as young cartoonists. Foundations in Fibers: Basics and Beyond Instructor: Kristi Nyhan Tues. 3:45-5:15 pm $115, Maximum 8 students Students will take art-making to a whole new level by exploring how fibers can transform drawing, painting and sculpture into exciting new creations! We will begin with an introduction to a variety of fiber media including weaving, dyeing and felting and then move into an exploration of 2D and 3D projects, using fibers in unique and innovative ways. This is an ideal class for first-time students, as well as those who have previously taken classes in other media. Drawing for Kids Instructor: Beth Brisson Wed. 3:45-5 pm $100, Maximum 12 students Students will learn the elements of tone, texture and line, while using a variety of dry and wet media including graphite, charcoal, pastel, watercolor and ink. This course is perfect for those young students who want to gain experience in the art of drawing, while working at a beginner’s level on projects suitable for young students. Expressive Landscapes! Instructor: Laura Zorawowicz Thurs. 3:45-5:15 pm $115, Maximum 8 students Swirling starry skies, reflective rivers and majestic mountains are all a part of this exiting class! We will explore the beauty of the natural world around us through the eyes of landscape painters such as O’Keeffe, Parrish, Monet and Van Gogh. As we explore texture and light in master artists’ work, we will create our very own masterpieces. Acrylics, watercolor and mixed media will all be explored in this nature inspired approach to the basics of painting. Jerry Holbert, Red Creature. Ages 7 - 10 Ages 7 - 10 Ages 9 - 12 Ages 9 - 12 Sculpture for Kids Instructor: Pam Difloures Sat. 9:15-10:30 am $115, Maximum 10 students Make bigger and more inventive sculptures using a variety of media including clay, paper mache, wood, wire and recycled materials. Figurative and abstract sculpture will be introduced so that students can exercise their imaginations. Collage for Kids Instructor: Amy Croteau Sat. 11 am-12:15 pm $115, Maximum 12 students Be inspired by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Faith Ringgold and Eric Carle as students explore the dynamic world of collage. Working from fine arts and illustration our young artists will work large and small, and in book form, to create a diverse range of beautiful and whimsical objects using hand-painted papers, construction paper, newsprint and so much more. Drawing in the Galleries for Kids Instructor: June Latti Mon. 3:45-5 pm $115, Maximum 12 students Working directly from masterworks in the Currier’s galleries, students will learn the elements of tone, texture and line, while using graphite media. Additionally, students will explore other media including charcoal, pastel and watercolor in a museum classroom. Creative Clay Sculpture Instructor: Pam Difloures Weds. 3:45-5:15 pm $100, Maximum 8 students Combine slab, coil building and press molding techniques to create a variety of ambitious clay sculptures, ranging from the figurative to the abstract. Design a mosaic tile mural, carve gargoyles from blocks of clay and build sculptural slab vessels! Learn about different glazing techniques and surface treatments. Ages 9 - 12 Ages 9 - 12 Ages 6 - 12 Painting Big! for Kids Instructor: TBD Thurs. 3:45-5:15 pm $115, Maximum 12 students For those young artists who are inspired to paint big, this is the perfect class for you! Our young artists will be painting on stretched canvases and large sheets of primed canvas, tacked to the wall, producing a variety of big paintings in tempera and acrylic inspired by abstract and representational paintings from the Currier Collection. Wire Sculpture Instructor: Pam Difloures Sat. 11 am-12:15 pm $115, Maximum 8 students This class will engage in making abstract and realistic works of art, using weaving, bending, coiling, twisting, braiding and much more. Students will be inspired by the “Calder Circus,” wire basketry and vessel making. Students will work principally with wire and other media such as colored tissue paper, beads, strips of metal to create inventive and original works of art. Home-school: Fundamentals of Art Instructor: TBD Tues. 10:30 am-noon $115, Maximum 10 students Home-schooled students will learn the fundamental principles of art in this fun class! Drawing, painting, printmaking and 3-D projects will encourage kids to get messy while also learning about great works of art, and the lives of artists.
