After reading Lai Kin’s proceedings from seminars he organized in 1980s to preserve<br />

Cantonese Opera, 12 I was amazed at the large scope <strong>of</strong> the Red Boat society, and I was also<br />

worried about the demise <strong>of</strong> the culture. In the seminar series, elderly performers and workers<br />

recounted details <strong>of</strong> the past— especially in the period 1911 to 1926 when Red Boats were the<br />

main transportation for opera troupes. The tightly structured Red Boat society is what shaped<br />

Cantonese opera. Almost all the people invited for the talks had been Red Boat performers and<br />

they had vivid descriptions <strong>of</strong> life on the red boats. For a hundred years, Red Boat Troupes<br />

provided entertainment for the estuary. They provided happiness, enjoyment and now I realized<br />

moral education. Cantonese opera and opera singing have also been home to the nostalgia <strong>of</strong><br />

Cantonese immigrants in foreign lands for the last one hundred and fifty years. Most performers,<br />

managers and musicians <strong>of</strong> Red Boats, have become history now. Being brought up in the<br />

Cantonese culture, I feel obligated to help preserve this part <strong>of</strong> the history.<br />

Objective <strong>of</strong> the Study<br />

Objectives <strong>of</strong> this study include situating the historical background <strong>of</strong> Cantonese Opera<br />

and Red Boat Troupes. I describe the culture, function, life, business, structure, performance<br />

practice, aesthetics, and music <strong>of</strong> the Red Boat Troupes. I also look into the social and economic<br />

understandings that brought about the demand for the Red Boat industry. I investigate changes<br />

in performance programs, venues, mixed troupe performances, music, aesthetics, taste, and<br />

demand that were brought about by modernity, industrialization, metropolitan living, trade,<br />

colonialism, Westernization, and improved transportation. Other objectives include discussing<br />

performances <strong>of</strong> the past and comparing them to present opera activities in Hong Kong, and in<br />
