the family, the village, and the county. High <strong>of</strong>ficial jobs followed, which would eventually lead<br />
to wealth and fame. Many scripts were based on a poor scholar who studied hard in order to pass<br />
the civil examination so that he could marry the girl he wanted. This would have been<br />
impossible because <strong>of</strong> his low social status. The plays also reflected the ancient Chinese value <strong>of</strong><br />
education, even though civil examination were not <strong>of</strong>fered every year, and only one person<br />
among hundreds <strong>of</strong> thousands could actually become a zong jyun in one examination.<br />
Librettist/composer Tong Dik Sung is an important figure in the history <strong>of</strong> Cantonese<br />
opera. His works are still being performed fifty years after his death. His poems were beautiful,<br />
and used elegant language. He elevated Cantonese opera to a higher literary status. Ci Tsai Gay<br />
(The Purple Hairpin) and Dai Nu Fa (Princess Coeung Ping) are some <strong>of</strong> his most memorable<br />
operas. One <strong>of</strong> the small tunes in Princess Coeung Ping is known to most Cantonese, even non-<br />
opera goers. Coi Sai Hung Mui Gai (The Reincarnation <strong>of</strong> the Red Plume) was Tong’s last<br />
opera. It is <strong>of</strong>ten performed and shared among other genres. It appears in other titles such as<br />
The Red Plum, Legend <strong>of</strong> Red Plum, Li Hui-liang, Hung Mei-ge, and The Red Plum Chamber.<br />
Dr. Chan S. Yan’s synopsis <strong>of</strong> this opera 105 has been translated to English (see appendix I).<br />
Competition with movies, Western or Chinese, changed opera plays from basic gong wu<br />
sup baat boon (Eighteen Standard Plays) and tai kong hei (out-line plays) to hei yuen hei (theater<br />
plays). Hong Kong has been a commercial center for the last century in Southeast Asia. The<br />
region looks up to Hong Kong for trends and fashion. Cantonese opera in Hong Kong has also<br />
