A FINE FRENCH BRONZE SALUTING CANNON BY<br />

VAUTROT MRE ARMURIER AU 4E HUSSARDS, DATED<br />

1824<br />

with tapering barrel formed in four stages, with raised<br />

astragal mouldings, engraved with a band of anthemion<br />

foliage behind the muzzle and fitted with a fore-sight,<br />

inscribed ‘MES PROPORTIONS FONT MA FORCE’, in a<br />

recessed panel and cast with the crowned Royal cypher of<br />

Louis XV, on the chase, cast and chased with a maned lion<br />

mask beneath the date on the first reinforce, inscribed with<br />

the maker’s details on the base ring, the cascabel drawnout<br />

to a globose button and engraved with further<br />

anthemion, a pair of lifting-handles of Gribeauval type and<br />

plain trunnions each impressed with the number ‘16’: on its<br />

original brass-clad wooden field carriage retaining some<br />

green paint throughout, painted with matching number ‘16’,<br />

fitted with elevating screw, and a pair of brass-shod spoked<br />

cambered wheels (one cup-square and one spoke are<br />

missing)<br />
