A FRENCH DECORATED PARTISAN, EARLY 17TH<br />
CENTURY<br />
with broad tapering central blade of hollow-diamond<br />
section, formed with a pair of up-turned lugs, etched and<br />
gilt on each side over the lower portion with scrolling<br />
tendrils terminating in winged grotesques, scrollwork and a<br />
classical trophy-of-arms all centring on a rondel filled by a<br />
mounted figure, perhaps <strong>Mar</strong>cus Curtius, tapering socket<br />
formed with a moulding at the top, fitted with a pair of<br />
robust up-turned spikes at the base, retaining some early<br />
gilding throughout (the head with areas of pitting and<br />
wear), on a wooden haft with iron shoe, covered with red<br />
fabric at the top and with a silver bullion tassel<br />

A FRENCH ETCHED PARTISAN, SECOND QUARTER OF<br />
THE 17TH CENTURY<br />
with very broad blade of flattened-diamond section<br />
tapering to a narrow point, formed with a pair of slender<br />
up-turned lugs at the base , the head etched on each side<br />
with differing classical warrior profile medallions,<br />
flowerheads and scrolling foliage all enriched with pointilée<br />
scrollwork on a finely matted ground and enclosed within a<br />
framework of pellets (the head slightly curved in profile),<br />
moulded collar, conical socket decorated en suite, and a<br />
pair of long straps, one stamped ‘C. Gounod’, on a wooden<br />
haft<br />
