Learning objective:<br />
By the end <strong>of</strong> this session, participants will<br />
be able <strong>to</strong> list the advantages <strong>of</strong><br />
breastfeeding <strong>for</strong> the baby, mother, family,<br />
and community<br />
Advantages <strong>for</strong> baby<br />
• Supplies all necessary nutrients in proper<br />
proportion<br />
• Digests easily and does not cause<br />
constipation<br />
• Protects against diarrhoea<br />
• Provides antibodies <strong>to</strong> illnesses<br />
• Protects against infection, including ear<br />
infections<br />
• During illness helps keep baby wellhydrated<br />
• Reduces the risks <strong>of</strong> allergies<br />
• Is always ready at the right temperature<br />
• Increases mental development<br />
• Prevents hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)<br />
• Promotes proper jaw, teeth, and speech<br />
development<br />
• Suckling at breast is com<strong>for</strong>ting <strong>to</strong> baby<br />
when fussy, overtired, ill or hurt<br />
• Promotes bonding<br />
• Is the baby’s first immunization<br />

Hand out coloured <strong>to</strong>kens <strong>to</strong> <strong>for</strong>m three<br />
discussion groups:<br />
1. Advantages <strong>for</strong> the baby (blue)<br />
2. Advantages <strong>for</strong> the mother (green)<br />
3. Advantages <strong>for</strong> the family and<br />
community (red)<br />
Have each group present its list and ask<br />
whether other participants have other<br />
points <strong>to</strong> add. Review handout and discuss<br />
in plenary.<br />
