<strong>Training</strong> in Communities, Day 2<br />
Objective/content/messages<br />
Learning objectives:<br />
By the end <strong>of</strong> this session, participants will<br />
be able <strong>to</strong>:<br />
• Train community facilita<strong>to</strong>rs in the<br />
methodology <strong>of</strong> mother-<strong>to</strong>-mother<br />
support groups.<br />
• Facilitate a breastfeeding mother-<strong>to</strong>mother<br />
support group in a community<br />
setting.<br />
Key messages:<br />
• Position and attach the baby correctly<br />
at the breast <strong>to</strong> prevent sore nipples.<br />
• Breastfeed exclusively <strong>for</strong> the first 6<br />
months, giving no water, other liquids,<br />
or solid foods.<br />
• Breastmilk contains enough water.<br />
• Breastfeed frequently day and night (on<br />
demand) <strong>for</strong> as <strong>of</strong>ten and as long as<br />
baby wants.<br />
• Continue <strong>to</strong> breastfeed baby on<br />
demand day and night while managing<br />
a breastfeeding difficulty.<br />
• With in<strong>for</strong>mation and support, all<br />
women can overcome breastfeeding<br />
difficulties and special situations.<br />
Materials/times/activities<br />
Materials:<br />
• Flipchart paper, markers, masking tape<br />
• Sessions 7, 8, 10 and 11 from training<br />
module<br />
Time:<br />
5 hours<br />
Activity:<br />
Form small groups <strong>of</strong> participants from the<br />
training who will act as facilita<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> the<br />
mother-<strong>to</strong>-mother support groups, with<br />
other participants <strong>of</strong> the training who will<br />
act as observers (number depending on<br />
<strong>to</strong>tal number <strong>of</strong> participants) and workshop<br />
facilita<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

2. Demonstration and practice <strong>of</strong><br />
positioning and attachment techniques<br />
3. Guided discussion on exclusive<br />
breastfeeding<br />
4. MtMSG practice co-facilitated with<br />
trainer and mother on “Early Days <strong>of</strong><br />
Breastfeeding,” discussion and<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> a mother-<strong>to</strong>-mother<br />
support group facilita<strong>to</strong>r<br />
5. Work groups on common difficulties:<br />
- Sore or cracked nipples<br />
- Engorgement<br />
- Blocked ducts<br />
- Low milk supply<br />
6. “Fishing game” on special situations<br />
7. Brains<strong>to</strong>rming key messages<br />
