Describe correct positioning and<br />

• Demonstrate alternative positions <strong>for</strong><br />

mothers and babies while<br />

breastfeeding.<br />

• Help a mother <strong>of</strong> a baby 0–2 months<br />

old child with correct positioning and<br />

attachment.<br />

Baby should be facing the breast.<br />

Baby and mother should be s<strong>to</strong>mach <strong>to</strong><br />

s<strong>to</strong>mach.<br />

Baby’s back and the head should be in<br />

a straight line<br />

<strong>Mother</strong> should bring the baby <strong>to</strong> the<br />

breast .<br />

Baby’s mouth should be wide open.<br />

Baby should take the areola, not only<br />

the nipple, in her/his mouth.<br />

<strong>Mother</strong> should support baby's but<strong>to</strong>cks<br />

with her palm<br />

Baby's chin should <strong>to</strong>uch the breast.<br />

Baby's lower lip should be curled<br />

outward.<br />

Baby will take slow, deep sucks if<br />

attachment is correct.<br />

Baby may be heard swallowing.<br />

Baby is calm at the breast.<br />

45 minutes<br />

Activity:<br />

Demonstrate positioning and attachment<br />

techniques with dolls and discuss.<br />

Participants practice correct positioning<br />

and attachment with dolls.<br />

Participants practice the techniques <strong>for</strong><br />

proper positioning and attachment in pairs<br />

with real mothers and babies<br />

Discuss in a plenary session the most<br />

important key messages on proper<br />

positioning and attachment techniques<br />

Key message:<br />

• Position and attach the baby correctly<br />

at the breast <strong>to</strong> prevent sore nipples.<br />
