11. Management <strong>of</strong> Breastfeeding in Special Situations<br />

Objective/content/messages<br />

Learning objectives:<br />

By the end <strong>of</strong> this session, participants will<br />

be able <strong>to</strong>:<br />

• Identify special situations <strong>for</strong> mothers<br />

and infants that can interfere with<br />

breastfeeding.<br />

• Discuss infant feeding options during<br />

these special situations.<br />

Content:<br />

Special situations (see handout 4.5)<br />

- Sick baby or mother<br />

- Premature baby<br />

- Malnourished mother<br />

- Twins<br />

- Daily separation <strong>of</strong> mother from her<br />

infant<br />

- Pregnancy<br />

- Cleft palate<br />

Key messages:<br />

1. <strong>Mother</strong>s need more support <strong>to</strong> continue<br />

breastfeeding in special situations.<br />

2. Breastfeed exclusively or express the<br />

milk and give it with a cup<br />

Materials:<br />

• Flipchart paper<br />

• Markers<br />

• Paper fish with special situation written<br />

or illustrated on the underside <strong>of</strong> each<br />

• Handout 11: “Breastfeeding<br />

Management in Special Situations” <strong>for</strong><br />

TOT<br />

Time:<br />

45 minutes<br />

Activity:<br />

Brains<strong>to</strong>rm the special situations <strong>of</strong><br />

breastfeeding that the participants and the<br />

women in their communities have<br />

experienced<br />

With special situations on the underside <strong>of</strong><br />

fish made <strong>of</strong> poster board, have each<br />

participant “fish” and discuss how <strong>to</strong><br />

handle the special situation “caught.” Form<br />

two groups if there are enough<br />

participants.<br />
