<strong>Training</strong> in Communities, Day 1<br />

Objective/content/messages<br />

Learning objectives:<br />

By the end <strong>of</strong> this session, participants will<br />

be able <strong>to</strong>:<br />

• Train community facilita<strong>to</strong>rs in MtMSG<br />

methodology.<br />

• Facilitate a breastfeeding MtMSG in a<br />

community setting.<br />

Pretest:<br />

1. Should a mother begin <strong>to</strong> breastfeed<br />

immediately after birth Y<br />

2. A mother needs <strong>to</strong> breastfeed on<br />

schedule in order <strong>to</strong> have sufficient<br />

milk. N<br />

3. Beginning at 4 months, a baby needs<br />

<strong>to</strong> eat and drink other foods. N<br />

4. Oil contains many calories. Y<br />

5. A baby between 6 – 8 months needs <strong>to</strong><br />

eat 5 times a day. N<br />

6. The first milk cleans the baby’s<br />

s<strong>to</strong>mach and is the first vaccination <strong>of</strong><br />

the baby. Y<br />

7. A mother-<strong>to</strong>-mother support group is<br />

the same as an educational talk. N<br />

8. In the first 6 months a baby should<br />

drink water and be breastfed. N<br />

9. A mother can use LAM <strong>to</strong> prevent<br />

pregnancy as long as she is<br />

breastfeeding. N<br />

10. After 6 months a baby should be given<br />

food on his/her own plate. Y<br />

11. In a mother-<strong>to</strong>-mother support group,<br />

mothers help other mothers. Y<br />

12. Many difficulties in breastfeeding can<br />

be resolved by proper positioning and<br />

attachment <strong>of</strong> the baby <strong>to</strong> the breast. Y<br />

Key messages:<br />

• Continue breastfeeding if baby (or<br />

mother) becomes ill .<br />

• Breastfeed within the first 30 minutes <strong>of</strong><br />

delivery.<br />

• Colostrum is the first immunization.<br />

• Breastmilk contains enough water.<br />

• Flipchart paper, markers, masking tape<br />

• Sessions 1 – 6<br />

Activity:<br />

Form groups <strong>of</strong> participants from the<br />

training who will act as facilita<strong>to</strong>rs, with<br />

other participants acting as observers<br />

(number depending on <strong>to</strong>tal number <strong>of</strong><br />

participants) and workshop facilita<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

breastfeeding<br />

makes milk<br />

7. MtMSG presentation led by the trainers<br />

on Advantages <strong>of</strong> Breastfeeding,<br />

with discussion and characteristics <strong>of</strong> a<br />

MtMSG<br />
