Purpose
To prepare the VITROS ® 5600 Integrated System for safe end-of-life transport and recycling. This is
in compliance with Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Union (EU) on Waste Electrical and
Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
Note: If it is not possible to follow this decontamination procedure, please contact Ortho Clinical
Diagnostics.
Important Considerations Before Starting
• Assume that all equipment is contaminated with potentially infectious biological material
and observe the following standards:
— The “Universal Precautions” recommended by the World Health Organization
(WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
— Directive 2000/54/EC of the EU “on the protection of workers from risks related
to exposure to biological agents at work”.
— Standard 29CFR1910.1030, “Bloodborne Pathogens” of the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Obtain copies of these standards at the website for each organization.
• Use the following personal protective equipment for this procedure:
— disposable safety gloves
— safety glasses
— lab coat
• Follow the manufacturer’s safety precautions for handling isopropyl alcohol.
• Place all discarded system parts and cleaning materials in a biohazard disposal container.
• Remove any dried test specimens or reagents when preparing the system for transport.

Assemble Cleaning Supplies
Note: This information is from the System Cleaning procedures.
Depending upon the procedure, you will need the following materials:
• disposable cloth or paper towels
• warm, soapy water
• Maintenance pack (OCD catalog number 1831312)
• Universal wash reagent (OCD catalog number 8389793)
• FL-80 cleaning solution (OCD catalog number 1877158)
• Three signal reagent (SR) packs
• 70% isopropyl alcohol-in-water solution
• Deionized or distilled water
Note: Use soap supplies in the laboratory specific for laboratory use.
Cleaning Procedure
IMPORTANT:
REFER TO V-DOCS TO LOCATE THE DAILY, WEEKLY, MONTHLY AND AS-
REQUIRED PERIODIC MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES AND FOLLOW THE
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH OF THE ITEMS LISTED BELOW.
1. Follow the instructions displayed on the “Periodic Maintenance - Daily” and “Periodic
Maintenance - Weekly” screens to clean the system.
2. Follow the instructions displayed on the “Periodic Maintenance - Monthly” and “Periodic
Maintenance As-Required” screens to perform System Cleaning.
3. Follow the instructions displayed on the screens to perform the following procedures to
continue cleaning the system:
• Clean PM discard chute
• Clean and then discard the PM evaporation caps
• Clean MicroSensor cover and Ring Area
• Inspect/Clean Reagent Supply Top Cover
• Inspect/Clean Supply 3 Pack Opener
• Inspect/Clean and then discard the reagent Cooler Filter
• Inspect/Clean and then discard the Master Computer Filter
• Clean System Cabinetry
• Inspect/Clean Cuvette Supply
• Inspect/Clean MicroTip Supply
• Clean cuvetip ring area
• Clean primary tip sealer
• Clean secondary tip sealer

• Clean cuvette incubator
• Clean cuvette transport arm
• Inspect/Clean the Microwell Incubator area for debris and clean the incubator surfaces,
if necessary.
4. Clean the system cabinet with warm, soapy water. Rinse with clean water and wipe dry.
5. Clean the system cabinet using 70% isopropyl alcohol and allow to air dry.
6. Open the top covers and clean the interior surfaces using a cloth and 70% isopropyl alcohol.

7. Remove and dispose of tips from the ERF, IWF, and metering.
8. Remove any debris from the side incubator area and clean the incubator surfaces.
• the desiccant and humidification packs
• the ERF and IWF reservoirs
• all proboscises
• all filters (Master Computer, System, and Cooler)
• all slide cartridges
• all reagent packs
• any tips that might have dropped into the system
• the sample trays
9. If present, remove and dispose of the waste containers.
10. Remove and dispose of the liquid wash and waste bottles.
11. Remove the paper from the printer.
12. Disconnect the power from the system.
After cleaning, set the device aside for three weeks. At the end of three weeks, the device is ready
for recycling and may enter the WEEE stream. Contact your local recycling or collection system for
further information.
