Purpose<br />
To prepare the VITROS ® 5600 Integrated System <strong>for</strong> safe end-of-life transport and recycling. This is<br />
in compliance with Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Union (EU) on Waste Electrical and<br />
Electronic Equipment (WEEE).<br />
Note: If it is not possible to follow this decontamination procedure, please contact Ortho Clinical<br />
Diagnostics.<br />
Important Considerations Be<strong>for</strong>e Starting<br />
• Assume that all equipment is contaminated with potentially infectious biological material<br />
and observe the following standards:<br />
— The “Universal Precautions” recommended by the World Health Organization<br />
(WHO) and the Centers <strong>for</strong> Disease Control (CDC).<br />
— Directive 2000/54/EC of the EU “on the protection of workers from risks related<br />
to exposure to biological agents at work”.<br />
— Standard 29CFR1910.1030, “Bloodborne Pathogens” of the Occupational<br />
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).<br />
Obtain copies of these standards at the website <strong>for</strong> each organization.<br />
• Use the following personal protective equipment <strong>for</strong> this procedure:<br />
— disposable safety gloves<br />
— safety glasses<br />
— lab coat<br />
• Follow the manufacturer’s safety precautions <strong>for</strong> handling isopropyl alcohol.<br />
• Place all discarded system parts and cleaning materials in a biohazard disposal container.<br />
• Remove any dried test specimens or reagents when preparing the system <strong>for</strong> transport.
Assemble Cleaning Supplies<br />
Note: This in<strong>for</strong>mation is from the System Cleaning procedures.<br />
Depending upon the procedure, you will need the following materials:<br />
• disposable cloth or paper towels<br />
• warm, soapy water<br />
• Maintenance pack (OCD catalog number 1831312)<br />
• Universal wash reagent (OCD catalog number 8389793)<br />
• FL-80 cleaning solution (OCD catalog number 1877158)<br />
• Three signal reagent (SR) packs<br />
• 70% isopropyl alcohol-in-water solution<br />
• Deionized or distilled water<br />
Note: Use soap supplies in the laboratory specific <strong>for</strong> laboratory use.<br />
Cleaning Procedure<br />
IMPORTANT:<br />
REFER TO V-DOCS TO LOCATE THE DAILY, WEEKLY, MONTHLY AND AS-<br />
REQUIRED PERIODIC MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES AND FOLLOW THE<br />
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH OF THE ITEMS LISTED BELOW.<br />
1. Follow the instructions displayed on the “Periodic Maintenance - Daily” and “Periodic<br />
Maintenance - Weekly” screens to clean the system.<br />
2. Follow the instructions displayed on the “Periodic Maintenance - Monthly” and “Periodic<br />
Maintenance As-Required” screens to per<strong>for</strong>m System Cleaning.<br />
3. Follow the instructions displayed on the screens to per<strong>for</strong>m the following procedures to<br />
continue cleaning the system:<br />
• Clean PM discard chute<br />
• Clean and then discard the PM evaporation caps<br />
• Clean MicroSensor cover and Ring Area<br />
• Inspect/Clean Reagent Supply Top Cover<br />
• Inspect/Clean Supply 3 Pack Opener<br />
• Inspect/Clean and then discard the reagent Cooler Filter<br />
• Inspect/Clean and then discard the Master Computer Filter<br />
• Clean System Cabinetry<br />
• Inspect/Clean Cuvette Supply<br />
• Inspect/Clean MicroTip Supply<br />
• Clean cuvetip ring area<br />
• Clean primary tip sealer<br />
• Clean secondary tip sealer<br />

• Clean cuvette incubator<br />
• Clean cuvette transport arm<br />
• Inspect/Clean the Microwell Incubator area <strong>for</strong> debris and clean the incubator surfaces,<br />
if necessary.<br />
4. Clean the system cabinet with warm, soapy water. Rinse with clean water and wipe dry.<br />
5. Clean the system cabinet using 70% isopropyl alcohol and allow to air dry.<br />
6. Open the top covers and clean the interior surfaces using a cloth and 70% isopropyl alcohol.<br />
Remove and Discard the Disposable Items<br />

7. Remove and dispose of tips from the ERF, IWF, and metering.<br />
8. Remove any debris from the side incubator area and clean the incubator surfaces.<br />
• the desiccant and humidification packs<br />
• the ERF and IWF reservoirs<br />
• all proboscises<br />
• all filters (Master Computer, System, and Cooler)<br />
• all slide cartridges<br />
• all reagent packs<br />
• any tips that might have dropped into the system<br />
• the sample trays<br />
9. If present, remove and dispose of the waste containers.<br />
10. Remove and dispose of the liquid wash and waste bottles.<br />
11. Remove the paper from the printer.<br />
12. Disconnect the power from the system.<br />
After cleaning, set the device aside <strong>for</strong> three weeks. At the end of three weeks, the device is ready<br />
<strong>for</strong> recycling and may enter the WEEE stream. Contact your local recycling or collection system <strong>for</strong><br />
further in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />
