Secondary School Weekly Bulletin Monday 23 rd April – Volume 1, Issue 24 had been alive today it is highly likely that he would be working in films writing screenplays, since after all he was a clever businessman. With this in mind Year 9 have been involved in giving a new twist to Shakespeare’s Macbeth by creating a modern and unusal context. The three sinister witches expertly played by Camila, Ines and Isabella used satellite navigation, King Duncan (a majestic Daniel) drowned in a hot tub, and Georgina’s cunning, wicked and extremely polished performance as Lady Macbeth together with her ladies in waiting was most entertaining. Sophie Tonge’s portrayal of Macbeth was impressive. Banquo (Cesar), Prince Malcolm (Markian) and Dr. McTavish (Ryan) had the audience in fits of laughter with their amusing jokes and Scottish accents. All students collaborated well during rehearsals and fully deserve to be congratulated for a fine team effort. The English Department would also like to thank Georgina Gamble and Susan Briggs for expertly assisting with the props. Mrs. H. Palmer & Mrs. F. Munoz – English Department This week students in year 8 have explored the topic “What caused people to believe in witchcraft in the 17 th Century” They were asked to identify reasons for these beliefs. By 1500 people had believed in witches for centuries. In small villages, where most people in Europe lived, little was known about health, medicine or about how the natural world worked. This meant that anyone who acted in a strange way was looked on with suspicion. People did not understand mental illness and were frightened by it. Students also learnt about the methods used at the time to identify witches. They were also asked to produce a poster warning others how to spot signs of witchcraft as homework for next week. Most people at this time could not read or write so the poster has to be largely visual, using a few words as possible. Watch this space next week to find out who produced the best poster. Mr. F. Marcos – Head of Humanities. Having been looking recently at the topic of ecosystems, this week Year 9 geography students have focused on the need for conservation with regard to wildlife. On Wednesday they watched a video produced by WWF (World Wildlife not Wrestling Federation!) showing a variety of endangered animals whose very existence is threatened, followed by another which showed the result of poaching, killing for tusks, skins, etc. For homework they have been asked to write a 500 word report in which they are describing the problem, identifying how the problem is, or could be, solved and giving their opinions on the issue. Marchand - Head of Secondary This week in Sociales, Year 8 students have been studying the history of Rome, one of the great Empires of the Antiquity. They learnt how, according to Roman mythology, the
Secondary School Weekly Bulletin Monday 23 rd April – Volume 1, Issue 24 city which was built by 2 brothers – Romulo & Remo – who took it from being just a small city in Italy to being a strong empire, controlling most of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. This is probably why they called the Mediterranean Sea “Mare Nostrum” (Our Sea). The Roman Empire finally fell to pieces in 476 DC due to multiple invasions from barbaric tribes from Northern Europe. Every student in the class produced a presentation using PowerPoint. This was a very enjoyable learning experience for all students involved. Well done Year 8! Mr. F. J. The UKMT Junior Maths Challenge takes place on Thursday 26th April and the Maths Department has selected 20 of our top students in Year 7 and 8 to take part in the competition. Natalia Mirón will no doubt be hoping to come out on top again, especially now that she is a year older, but there is some stiff competition coming through the ranks in Year 7. In any case, everyone taking part will gain a lot from being challenged to think laterally and logically on these cleverly designed puzzles.
