Initiating Lithium • Lithium should generally not be given to patients with significant renal or cardiovascular disease • The risk of lithium toxicity is very high in patients receiving diuretics or ACE inhibitors • Lithium should be avoided in pregnant women because of a risk of cardiac malformation in the fetus
