History<br />
• 1817 Johan Arfwedson discovered a new alkali<br />
in a sample of minerals from an island near<br />
Stockholm, Sweden<br />
–Named lithion by Jons Jacob Berzelius, Arfwedson’s<br />
lab chief<br />
• 1843 Alexander Ure introduced lithium into<br />
medicine for gout and uric acid bladder stones<br />
• 1871 William A. Hammond, Surgeon General of<br />
US Army, described using lithium in acute mania
