WHY STUDY AT
POSTGRADUATE LEVEL
To find your vocation
Some students with nonvocational
first degrees (English,
Maths etc), find that postgraduate
study gives them a way to
you to have an accredited degree,
plus relevant experience. Many of
our postgraduate courses are
graduate qualification can give
you the boost you need to take
the next step along your career
path and increase your earning
potential.
for you and to speak to us in
person. We hold a number of
open days throughout the year
where you can speak to tutors,
‘convert’ their degree towards a
specific career path, such as
management, teaching, or even
starting their own business. If you
haven't identified a clear career
path at undergraduate level,
postgraduate study is the perfect
opportunity to get on track for a
specific vocation or career.
WHY
US
Our priority is you
Our priority is to help our students
develop the skills to advance their
own careers, and because our
focus isn’t on publishing our own
research, we have more time for
our students, something we know
they really appreciate.
Flexible programmes of study
Many of our students already have
jobs and study with us part time.
So, whether you have a full-time
job, a family or both, our part-time
study programmes provide the
flexibility you need wherever
possible. Many of our part-time
courses have teaching scheduled
during evenings and weekends,
while others give you options to
help you study around work or
childcare.
“ The course delivery is
“ The MBA is an
structured around
intensive residential
blocks at weekends,
followed by an interval
to consolidate and
develop understanding
and skills in practice.
This helps it fit with
other employment
and family obligations.”
Student, Postgraduate Diploma
Small class sizes
Although at postgraduate level
you will be expected to be an
autonomous learner, our small
classes mean that your work gets
the attention it deserves and that
you get high-quality support when
you need it. Our staff are all
experts in their fields, and are
friendly and readily available to
help. They place a great deal of
emphasis on delivering highquality
teaching, in a challenging,
yet supportive environment.
Tutor support
Your own personal tutor is
available to offer advice and
support on every aspect of your
course and career. Time is also set
aside for tutorials, where
individuals or small groups meet
to discuss various issues.
excellent programme…
the team are very
caring and know all of
their students well and
much time is spent
giving appropriate
guidance and advice.”
SARAH
CROSSLAND
Sarah Crossland is the Site
Librarian at University Centre
Doncaster, and has recently
completed the MA in Education
Innovation and Enterprise at the
University Centre Doncaster.
I chose the course as I thought it
would be really interesting. It was
looking at innovation and
enterprise within education and
how Learning Resource Centres
can use new and emerging
technologies to greater effect to
support teaching and learning
activities. From very early on I
thought it would be something I’d
like to do.
The course is designed so that
regardless of your background,
you can apply the modules to your
own area of professional practice.
We were able to tailor it to our
own work and focus in on the
areas which were of particular
interest.
We all had such varied
backgrounds, we learnt a lot from
each other.
THE BENEFITS TO MY EMPLOYER
I think from my perspective, it
helped me to look at the role of
learning resources; how we
support learners, but also how we
support our academic colleagues
in their teaching practices.
The course helped me develop
resources such as an electronic
plagiarism tool, which is now
used in the University Centre.
As part of my dissertation I
surveyed 50 students to find out
how well, or otherwise, they were
supported by the University
Centre’s distance learning. I’m
now using that information to
implement changes, which will
improve the support and
guidance that we are providing.
WENDY
DODSON
Wendy Dodson went straight
into employment after studying
for her A-Levels. Over the years
she has gained a lot of experience
in many different vocations.
However, Wendy wanted to widen
her opportunities, and opted to
study the MBA at University
Centre Doncaster.
WHY CHOOSE THE MBA
I completed my A-levels and went
straight into employment. I’d
gained lots of management
experience over the years, but I
didn’t have a piece of paper saying
I was capable of doing it. The
world is changing out there, so I
wanted to widen my opportunities,
and after looking at lots of courses
and talking to to the tutors at
University Centre Doncaster, we
decided that the MBA was most
appropriate.
DONCASTER’s FLEXIBLE APPROACH
I’ve got family responsibilities,
children and elderly parents, so I
couldn’t afford to be away from
home for huge spells and I needed
to carry on working, so the flexible
approach that Doncaster offered
was ideal.
THE BENEFITS - PROMOTION
The course puts lots of the theory
behind the practice that I’ve done
over the years, and it’s answered a
lot of questions that I’ve had in
the past, I’ve made lots of new
connections and I now know a lot
more people. It’s also helped me
gain employment within another
organisation. I needed a degree to
apply for it, so having done the
MBA I was able to apply. The
interview process was a long one,
including assessment days, tests
and three different interviews, so
I’ve had to draw on a lot of the
things that I’d learnt on the
course.
