Assistant Principal of the Year Finalist Cheryl Proctor, Ed. S. Banyan Elementary School Banyan Elementary School has become a model of excellence, thanks to the guidance of Cheryl Proctor. With 14 years of experience, six as an assistant principal, her positive attitude and love for her students are refl ected in the outstanding quality of leadership she maintains. By using her business background in marketing and advertising, she was able to examine aspects of internal practices by analyzing the product, which is student learning. Knowing that improved student outcomes will increase the marketability of the school, she reviewed teacher practice, provided professional development for areas of instructional weakness, then monitored student and instructional progress to ensure high quality instruction in each classroom and also ensure that teaching is student centered. Proctor is responsible for the school’s application as a candidate for the Urban School of Excellence Award; an honor bestowed upon a Title I school that is demonstrating exceptionally high levels of student achievement. In addition, Proctor gives generously of her time and often works beyond the school day to provide services to the community. Not only is she an outstanding leader at Banyan Elementary, she is utilized two days per week to provide meaningful instructional leadership assistance to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School. When the principal of that school needed to take a shortterm leave, Proctor was asked to fi ll in earlier this year. Faced with diffi cult tasks in an unfamiliar environment, her outstanding leadership skills truly shined through. 19
Assistant Principal of the Year Nominees The Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award was established by the Florida Department of Education to recognize exemplary principals for their contributions to their schools and communities. The program honors assistant principals who have utilized teamwork and leadership skills to increase student performance, promote safe learning environments and establish partnerships with parents and community members.
