DRIE-D designed and produced the D-Glide bearings in 3 weeks, the costs were much lower than those of any of the investigated alternatives and this solution was the only one truly maintenance free. To keep them in good condition seals and lubrication are essential and even than they do not live forever. Roller bearings in these dimensions (shaft diameters of ø700 and up) are expensive and delivery times are long. Thanks to the low friction values of D-glide for this kind of applications often D-glide bearings are a good alternative. DRIE-D has the ability to mount D-glide sheet material in radius in a metal housing and this way on short term any size bearing can be produced against a fraction of the costs of the comparable roller bearings. Added advantages are that they do not require any maintenance, allowable loads are much higher and they can be used both dry and in (sea)water without any provisions. For new installation the dimensions of this kind of D-glide bearings can be much smaller than the comparable roller bearings.
