3 Materials <strong>and</strong> methods<br />

3.1 Description of the study area<br />

3.1.1 Location, climate <strong>and</strong> topography<br />

The study was conducted <strong>in</strong> <strong>Metema</strong> district, <strong>North</strong> Gondar Zone of Amhara Regional<br />

State (Figure 1). <strong>Metema</strong> is located between 12º40’00” N <strong>and</strong> 36º8’00” E. It is 925<br />

km northwest of Addis Ababa <strong>and</strong> 180 km west of Gondar town. The district has an<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational boundary of more than 60 km long distance between Ethiopia <strong>and</strong> Sudan.<br />

It has 18 rural <strong>and</strong> 2 urban kebeles. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to IPMS (2005), out of the total 18 rural<br />

kebeles <strong>in</strong> the district, 16 are under moist kola <strong>and</strong> the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g two kebeles are dry<br />

kola. Mean annual temperature ranges from 22ºC to 28ºC <strong>and</strong> daily temperature reaches<br />

as high as 43ºC dur<strong>in</strong>g the months of March to May. Mean annual ra<strong>in</strong>fall ranges from<br />

850 mm to 1100 mm (IPMS 2005) <strong>and</strong> has unimodal pattern. The ra<strong>in</strong>y months extend<br />

from June to end of September. Altitudes range from 550 to 1068 masl.<br />

3.1.2 Human population <strong>and</strong> livestock <strong>resources</strong><br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to CSA (2005), the human population <strong>in</strong> the woreda is estimated at 76,084<br />

rural (54.2% male) <strong>and</strong> 18,467 urban (50.0% male). The majority of the population (80%)<br />

lives <strong>in</strong> rural areas with farm<strong>in</strong>g as a major occupation. The orig<strong>in</strong>al residents of the area<br />
