This course focuses on the study of
American literature, language, and
composition. Emphasis is placed on
the understanding of major authors,
periods, features, and themes of
American literature and on the writing
process to produce specified papers,
including literary analysis, the
persuasive essay, and the brief
research paper. Speaking and
listening skills, vocabulary and
reference skills are included. Summer
reading is required to be completed
by the first day of school.
English III Honors
Grade Level: 11
Prerequisite: Eng. II or H &

This course builds on prior
knowledge and focuses on the
advanced study of literature,
language, and composition. Emphasis
is placed on the understanding of
major authors, periods, features, and
interpretation of themes of American
literature and on the writing process
to produce specified papers, including
literary analysis, the persuasive essay,
and the brief research paper.
Vocabulary development includes
select Latin/Greek roots, prefixes and
suffixes. Advanced speaking and
listening skills and reference and
study skills are also included.
Summer reading is required.
English IV Honors

This course focuses on the advanced
study of literature, language, and
composition. Emphasis is placed on
the understanding of the major authors
and periods of British literature
and on the writing process to produce
specified papers, including literary
analysis, the précis, and the research
paper. Advanced speaking and listening
skills, vocabulary development,
reference and study skills, and
history of the English language are
also included. Summer reading is
required.
Advanced Placement English:
Language and Composition
Grade level: 11
Prerequisite: English Honors II
Full Year - 1 Credit Q
This course focuses on an extensive
study of literature and language.
Emphasis is placed on the semantic,
structural, and rhetorical resources of
the English language as they relate to
the principles of effective writing.
Students are required to take the
Advanced Placement examination.
This course substitutes for the English
III requirement. Summer reading is
required to be completed by the first
day of school.
NOTE: The exam for the first semester
of the AP courses is part of the
course curriculum and cannot be
exempted.
English IV
Grade Level: 12
Prerequisite: English III

This course focuses on the study of
literature, language, and composition.
Emphasis is placed on the understanding
of the major authors and
periods of British literature and on the
writing process to produce specified
papers, including the persuasive
essay, and the research paper.

included. Summer reading is required.

All students must read over the
summer as part of the
fundamental program. A
detailed list of required readings
will be available on the school’s
website and in the front office
throughout the summer. Be sure

Advanced Placement English:
Literature and Composition

This course focuses on an extensive
study of literature and writing. Emphasis
is placed on an appreciation of
the power of language, an understanding
of the writer’s craft, and the
development of critical standards for
appreciating literary works. Students
are required to take the Advanced
Placement exam. This course substitutes
for the English IV requirement.
Summer reading is required.
