More Elective Options in Social Studies AP OPTIONS Ancient History l (Global Studies) Grade Level: 10 - 12 Prerequisite: None 1 Semester - 1/2 Credit This course will survey antiquity from prehistoric times through the time of Alexander the Great. Approximately 6 weeks will be spent on Near East and Egypt while the focus will address Greek History. Various aspects of political, social and cultural history will be explored. Historical theory will be analyzed with respect to the primary and secondary sources. Students will be expected to read original source materials and answer questions based on their reading assignments. Contemporary History Grade Level: 10 - 12 Prerequisite: None 1 Semester - 1/2 Credit This course will explore the history of the world since World War II. Students will examine the effects of wars, religion, and international relationships and how they shape today’s world. The content will include the following: world events and trends in the twentieth century with an emphasis on the past two decades, time and space relationships, historical, political, economic, and social events that have impacted the contemporary world. Psychology I Grade Level: 11 - 12 Prerequisite: None 1 Semester - 1/2 Credit This course takes an in-depth look at the basis of human behavior. Topics such as research methods, biological basis of behavior, lifespan development, memory, cognition and personality are addressed in great detail. The course also parallels a college-level curriculum and the requirements are of a collegiate nature. The course also requires both written and oral expression with an emphasis on higherlevel critical thinking skills. Psychology II Grade Level: 11 - 12 Prerequisite: Psychology I 1 Semester - 1/2 Credit Psychology II allows students to gain an in-depth look at developmental, motivational, and emotional psychology. Issues such as cognitive development, morality, identity, sexual attraction, gender, and aging will all be covered in great depth. Designed to parallel university course sections of developmental, motivational, and emotional psychology, students will evaluate psychological materials through empirical research. Sociology Grade Level: 10 - 12 Prerequisite: None 1 Semester - 1/2 Credit Unlike psychology which looks at the study of individual behavior, sociology investigates human behavior from a group perspective. The content of the course includes social relationships and trends. Topics such as roles individuals play in groups, factors that impact behavior of individuals within groups, delinquency, divorce and suicide are discussed. Survey of World War ll (Holocaust) Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: None 1 Semester - 1/2 Credit Students explore the causes and effects of the Second World War and make connections to our country’s role in the world today. Students will use their knowledge of history, geography, economics, political processes, culture and ethics to acquire an understanding of how World War II shaped the world in which we live. Students will gain an appreciation of those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy. Advanced Placement European History Grade Level: 11 - 12 Prerequisite: Word History Honors with teacher recommendation Full Year - 1 Credit Q This course provides a narrative of events and movements, for students to develop (a) an understanding of some of the principal themes in modern European History, (b) an ability to analyze historical evidence and historical interpretation, and (c) an ability to express historical understanding in writing. Advanced Placement Psychology Grade Level: 11 - 12 Prerequisite: Psychology l or ll with teacher recommendation Full Year - 1 Credit Q This advanced study course covers all areas of psychology in great detail with curriculum that expands beyond the AP National Psychology exam. Apart from the class content, students are able to research individual interests within each area covered. The course requires a heavy emphasis on individual study skills and readings. AP Psychology also requires students to synthesize and evaluate material presented through both oral and written formats. Advanced Placement Human Geography Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: Grade of B or better in a social studies class with teacher recommendation Full Year - 1 Credit Q The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of the earths’ surface. Elective Options World Languages French I Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: None Full Year - 1 Credit Class Fee of $5 This course introduces students to the target language and its culture and develops communication skills and cross cultural understanding. Emphasis is placed on listening and speaking, with special attention on pronunciation. An introduction to reading, writing and the fundamentals of grammar and culture are also included. French II Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: French I Full Year - 1 Credit Class Fee of $5 This course reinforces the fundamental skills previously acquired by the students. Emphasis is placed on expansion of listening and speaking skills and increased reading and writing skills. The content includes a cultural survey of the French-speaking people. French III Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: French II Full Year - 1 Credit Q Class Fee of $5 This course reinforces, masters, and expands skills previously learned. Emphasis is placed on expansion of contemporary vocabulary, grammar, structure, and conversational skills through discussions on selected readings and activities important to everyday life of the French-speaking people. French IV Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: French III Full Year - 1 Credit Q Class Fee of $5 This course reinforces, masters and expands skills learned previously. Emphasis is placed on acquiring more advanced language structures, idiomatic expressions and expanded vocabulary through listening and speaking activities, varied readings, and writing reports and compositions. French V Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: French IV Full Year - 1 Credit Q Class Fee of $15 This course expands the skills learned previously. Emphasis is placed on developing communication skills through the presentation of oral reports on literary and cultural topics, current events and personal experiences. Readings include newspaper/magazine articles, short stories and plays, and a survey of literature. Writing is enhanced through compositions using correct language structures and expanded vocabulary. French VI Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: French V Full Year - 1 Credit Q Class Fee of $20 This course emphasizes the student’s ability to communicate ideas, feelings and opinions in oral and written forms. There is further development of comprehension skills through the study of literary selections and reading and interpretation of great works. AP Options Advanced Placement Spanish Language Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: Spanish IV Full Year - 1 Credit Q Class Fee of $25 This course develops oral and written fluency in the language. The content includes that determined by the Advanced Placement Program. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement exam. Advanced Placement French Language Grade Level: 9 - 12 Prerequisite: French IV Full Year - 1 Credit Q Class Fee of $25 This course develops oral and written fluency in the language.
