The Sixth Form New York trip was an
outstanding experience. The staff made it
enjoyable and filled our days with laughter
and new travel experiences. I personally
felt like it was a great adventure, geng to
know the concrete jungle and having free
me to explore its vastness. The sites were
spectacular. Not much beats the city
skyline, at night, from on top of the Empire
State, but perhaps the one thing that does
is the incredible performance of The Lion
King on Broadway, a memory that will
sck with me for my whole life. I can
certainly say that the trip was amazing and
I would like to thank the people who made
it so. Anyone considering going should
make the most of this opportunity as there
is not another one like it.
Corbett’s Column
It has been a relavely short but acon packed term,
with experiences ranging from ‘Oliver` and the
Magistrates Mock Trial to external GCSE and A Level
examinaons and a visit to Zambia. Given everything
that has been achieved, it is almost invidious of me to
pick out these examples.
Parent Surveys
A sample (223) of Year 8, 10, 11 and 12/13 parents
have been surveyed at parents’ evenings thus far.
Here are some of their views :

96.4% feel that their child is taught well;
97% feel that their child is making good progress;
96% state that they believe their child is happy at
school;
96% feel that the school ensures that pupils are
well behaved;
96% feel that the school is well led and
managed.
Although these responses are encouraging, I need to
urge you to contact me when we do not live up to our
usual high standards. In addion, we have an Ofsted
inspecon coming soon so please respond to Parent
View.
Pupil Premium
A reminder that if you child is in receipt of Free School
Meals they are likely to be eligible for the Pupil
Premium, a sum of money provided by the
Government to support their educaon aspiraons and
achievements. For further informaon please contact
Nigel Evans our Raising Aspiraons Co‐ordinator.
Appointments of New Staff
The last few weeks have also been filled with
interviews to appoint new staff in the Technology,
English and Drama departments. I am hugely grateful
to the students who have contributed magnificently to
the process.
Although I never like to lose colleagues who have given
great service to the school, those leaving in the
summer are either rering or moving on to promoted
posts. I will provide further details in the near future.
Excing Post‐16 possibilies
I am very proud of our current Sixth Form provision;
offering as it does a very popular collecon of ‘A` level
choices. Indeed, around 160 youngsters have already
expressed an intenon to join Year 12 next September.
In spite of this we will never stand sll and I have been
surveying current Year 10 students on what addional
provision we might consider for introducon in September
2014. I share the determinaon of Governors
to look at the feasibility of a business enterprise type
offering. If this is to be a success it will require the involvement
of local businesses and universies. If you
can help, or know someone who could, please get in
touch with me.
Internaonal Links
I am sure that two of our key internaonal acvies
will be covered in full in our next newsleer. However,
I must offer Paul Watson, Vicki Brown and our seven
students our best wishes for their two week stay in
Zambia that began on 22nd March. In addion, we
welcome youngsters from Plouay during the first week
back aer Easter. A recepon will be held in the dining
room at 6.30pm on Tuesday 16th April.
Geng down to some serious revision
Whilst I appreciate the pressures upon them I have
stressed to Year 11, 12 and 13 students the importance
of significantly advancing their preparaons for the
summer examinaons over the Easter holidays. The
establishment of a proper revision regime is the key to
success.
Friends of Pershore High
I must also thank all those involved in the Friends for
arranging the Quiz and Aucon, and Easter Egg Bingo,
this term. They were both very enjoyable and
successful fund raising events, raising around £600 for
school funds.
And finally
Can I thank all staff for their on‐going commitment and
professionalism. It remains a joy to work with our
wonderful young people and to appreciate their varied
contribuons to our school.
I hope that you all have an enjoyable and snow free
Easter break.
Ofsted Parent View
As you will know from the leer we
received from Ofsted last year we are
expecng an Ofsted inspecon before the
end of the summer term.
At the announcement of the inspecon
Ofsted will ask you to complete an online
survey using their website Parent View.
However, this can be done in advance and
your views will be added to those collected
at the me of the inspecon. You need to
register an email address and you are then
able to complete a short survey. The
quesons are very similar to those that we
ask you to complete at Parents’ Evenings.
It would be very helpful to the school if
each parent could take a few minutes to
sign up to the Parent View site and then
complete the survey.
The link to the website is: hp://
School Uniform Change from September 2013
Following consultaon with students
through their House councils, there is to
be a change to the school’s uniform
regulaons from September 2013.
From the start of the next academic year,
only one type of skirt will be acceptable
for female students.
The required skirt is a Luton (Black), with
the reference number 3598. The cost for
a skirt up to a 22” waist will be £12.95p
and £15.25p for a skirt up to a 28”
waist. The price increase is due to VAT,
with the laer considered to be an adult
size. The skirt can be sourced from either
School Togs in Worcester or The School
Shop in Evesham.
As before, girls may also wear plain black
straight‐legged trousers sold as school
wear (polyester/wool). Trousers must
not be denim or cord. Flares, harem and
ght‐fing trousers are not permied.
This change has become necessary as
there is such a variance in skirts sold as
‘school wear’. Despite our policy stang
that skirts should be black and not jersey,
lycra or stretch, and around knee length,
a significant proporon of current skirts
worn do not adhere to these criteria yet
have been sold as ‘school wear’.
The students have had an input into the
uniform skirt idenfied and we know that
many are happy with the style chosen.
We are informing you of this change now
as many of you may be starng to make
plans for next year’s uniform, or indeed
buying uniform now which is ancipated
to last over a significant period of me
and certainly into the next academic
year.
The Youth Council has rescheduled the Quiz
from Friday 22nd March to Friday 26th April,
BBC Drama Village Trip – Birmingham
On Wednesday 27 th February, a group of
Sixth Form Business Studies students went
on a trip to the BBC Drama Village in Selly
Oak, Birmingham. The trip provided us
with the opportunity to interview Sam Hill,
the Line Producer of dayme drama,
Doctors, whose job role we were studying.
We also got the chance to take a tour of
the set of ‘Doctors’, watched some scenes
being filmed and then were taken on a
tour of post‐producon to see what
happens before the programme is
transmied. We finished off the day
with some chips from the canteen in the
Drama Village. It provided us with a real
insight into a very different business
that many people do not get the
opportunity to see and how businesses
like this are managed.
Year 11 GCSE Revision Day
On Thursday the 7 th of March I parcipated
in an intensive revision day run by Tutor2u.
We travelled to the Vue Cinema, Star City,
Birmingham. The trip provided five sessions
covering all topics and how to answer
selected quesons. This really helped me to
revise the very first topics we covered in the
GCSE and what the examiners are looking
for. Taking the day out in a different
environment made the trip really
worthwhile and useful.
Young Engineers geared up for contest
A group of Pershore High School
students have put their skills to the
ulmate test by taking part in a
naonal compeon. The students
travelled to Manchester for the finals of
the Naonal Science and Engineering
Compeon on Thursday 14th and Friday
15th March.
In order to get to the final the group
worked on a long‐term project to develop
quick and simple soluons to fix industrial
gear boxes in cars in the
quickest me possible. The project has
been facilitated through the universies
and professionals.
The Engineering Educaon Scheme (EES)
is a naonal programme providing
students with hands on experience of
engineering with sponsorship and help
from local companies.
Our appreciaon goes to our neighbours
Allen Gears who were on hand to help the
students and gave them several challenges
to complete while developing their
problem solving skills.
Since progressing to the naonal final the
students have been preparing by gathering
feedback from companies. Andrew
Hemming said , “Taking part in the project
has been a great learning experience. As
well as being thoroughly enjoyable,
preparing for the Naonal finals has
provided us with a good insight into the
world of engineering, enabling us to
prepare for a successful career in this field”.
Laura Conway, Technology School added
“The EES scheme provides a wonderful
opportunity for our students to link and
apply subjects in a real world context. This
is an important and excing way of learning
and brings the very best out of our
students”.
Slimbridge Wildlife Trust Visit
I think Slimbridge was fun and educaonal. I liked the
animals and the birds, especially the oers, the nenes
and the cranes the cranes were doing their courtship
dance.
I liked it when we fed the oers, the mum and two
babies.
The nenes came running up to us and when we went to
play in the park and Miss told us to come back, the
nenes came running up to her.
Lancaster Writing Awards
Extracts of a leer
received from
John Schad
Professor of Modern Literature and
Head of Department County College
University of Lancaster
I am delighted to inform you that the work
of one of your students, Gareth Roberts,
has been long‐listed for the Lancaster
Wring Awards for Crical Wring and
Ficon. We had a very strong field of
submissions (121 in all), and this student’s
work has been chosen as one of only nine
to be long‐listed in each of those
categories.
The standard of the work submied was
high, so he is to be congratulated on this
achievement.
The long‐list from each category will now
go forward for short‐lisng: three pieces
of work in each category will be selected
by the end of April, and the winners will
be announced at our sixth‐form
conference early in July.
We are planning on announcing the
long‐list for each category (crical wring,
ficon, poetry) on our web‐site later this
week.
The Three Counties Debating Competition
On 6 th March, we intrepidly ventured out
to Malvern College for the Three
Counes Debang compeon. With just
fieen minutes to prepare speeches, and
no less than eight teams, the
compeon was fierce. There were
three debates during the day on
subjects as diverse as “This House Would
Raise the Drinking Age to 21” and “This
House Believes Religion Has No Place In
Schools”. But by 3.00pm the final was
ready. Four teams were through;
Bromsgrove, Pershore High School and
two teams from Malvern College. The
debate was on “This House Would
Invest in Sending Men to Other Planets”.
Guinness World Record Attempt
On 6 th February 2013, 46 students
and Mrs Merre from the English
Department took part in an
aempt to break the Guinness
World Record for the most people
wring the same story
simultaneously at different venues.
The project was called ‘Parallel
Universes’ the opening of the story,
which parcipants were given, was
linked to this theme. By wring up
to a maximum of two sentences
each, the group were asked to
connue the narrave one by one.
Currently, the record stands at 953
parcipants in 5 different venues,
but with over 100 schools involved
Despite a tense final the victory went to
Bromsgrove School. All in all this was a
hugely enjoyable experience and we look
forward to entering another team next
year.
this me, there is a good chance that this
could be broken.
Fingers crossed.
No 13 Graveyard Road by
… They neared the
trying to hide their fear and
huge goose bumps on their
boarded up and ghostly
graffi and vandalism
covered the large, crooked
house. Slowly and carefully
they knocked on the front
door. Knock, knock, knock.
No answer, phew! Gingerly,
they used their experse
stealth skills to silently
enter the house. Isolaon
I love the way you’ve used
a variety of sentence
Excellent use of acve verbs
Extract from, The Deserted House by Emmie Bewley.
The wind crashed and howled. The sky turned charcoal
black and spears of white lightening shot from the sky.
Cathy and I ran, wherever we could… anywhere to get
away. We had all heard how you could get struck by
lightening in an open field. We had to get out of the open,
and get under cover.
In the distance, I caught a glimpse of an old run‐down
house.
“QUICK, RUN!” I shouted. I sprinted for all I was worth and
Cathy (my best friend) dashed aer me. We reached the
By Jacob Holmes
On 28 th February this year a group of Sixth
Formers went on a field trip to The
Naonal Museum of Compung at
Bletchley Park. The museum is located a
short distance from the actual house of
Bletchley Park, a country residence most
famous for being the base of operaons
for the code breakers of Nazi ciphers
during World War Two. The first thing the
group embarked upon was a talk from the
museum guide about the code breakers’
efforts to break the Nazi’s’ Enigma codes
and later, Hitler’s radio messages to his
generals. These efforts would take a vast
and skilled team of code analysts,
mathemacians and linguists (to translate
the code from different languages into
English) around 3 weeks to decipher.
Thanks to the maths and logical thinking
of Compung pioneer Alan Turing and
technical abilies of engineer Tommy
Flowers, the code breakers were able to
develop the world’s first programmable
electronic computer; the Colossus. This
machine could solve the codes in 6 hours
rather than 3 weeks which really contributed
to the Allies’ war effort. The group
really enjoyed geng to see a fully func‐
onal working reconstrucon of the Colossus
in operaon and seized the opportunity
to take plenty of pictures of the
machine.
The Sixth Formers then got to see the
WITCH computer, used for atomic energy
calculaons in the 1950’s at Harwell and
Pictured le to right: Andrew Higginson, Andrew Aitken, Andrew Wright, Jack Goddard, George Stephens, Simon Cartwright, Jacob
Holmes, Joe Busby, Dan Comber, Aaron Burge, James Wright , Will Clarke, Olly John, Jay Gibbs and Jake Jenkins
then used at the Wolverhampton Instute
of Technology which was worked on by Mrs
Kershaw of the Compung department’s
father no less. Some of the group got to
operate the machine as it was going through
a calculaon which took several minutes for
a simple mulplicaon sum.
The group then had their names printed out
in the form of data on computer punch tape
from a 1960s business computer and got to
play vintage 1980s video games on original
hardware. The group did their very own
coding at the end of the trip by
programming a version of the game
“Snake” onto a BBC micro computer using
the BASIC programming language as well
as geng to see soware running the BBC
Domesday Project soware which Year 12
Applied ICT students will cover as part of
their course. The highlight of the day was
geng presented with a genuine valve
from the reconstructed Colossus Computer
to take back to the Compung department
at Pershore High. It was a real privilege to
see the computers throughout history
which have influenced the digital world we
live in today.
Hope for Georgia
Gorgeous Baby Georgia (daughter of Natalie Naughton and Dan Almquest) was born on 13th October 2010 a perfect baby. But due to the
hospital’s mistake, she has Cerebal Palsy with spascity in all 4 limbs, this prevents her from being able to hold her head up, talk, sit or
crawl. Doctors have said it is unlikely that Georgia will ever be able to walk. She is currently 28 months old and the one thing that she can
do, despite her parents being told she couldn’t, is smile.
Children like Georgia need people like you to do something about the problems they face day to day.
There is a treatment available, stem cell therapy that could dramacally improve Georgia's quality of life. The fatal stem cells are given to
paents and these cells have the capacity to find damaged or dead cells in the brain and elsewhere in the body and repair that damage. This
treatment is currently not available in the UK. It is available in America, China and Germany. Children like Georgia have made tremendous
progress aer having this treatment, by starng to sit up crawl, stand up, even walking and talking.
“Everyone deserves the chance to live a happy and healthy life.”
“We all have the opportunity and ability to speak out for those who can’t, we must use this to our advantage, and speak out for those
whose voices are to quiet for anyone to hear, if we all shout together then no one can say they didn’t know.”
“Charity like this one restores your faith in the human race”
This fabulous charity aims to raise £40,000 and is currently just over half way there. So I implore you to get behind this charity and
Modern Foreign Languages
Foreign Language Leaders Award
The Foreign Language Leaders Award
(FLLA) is a fantasc experience for anyone
who enjoys taking part in linguisc
acvies and teaching children the basics
of languages.
At the start of the course we all (Chris
Cosne, Ed Jordan and Holly Toney) had to
choose a language which would be
enjoyable for ourselves, but also simplisc
and enjoyable for the First School children
we had to teach. We decided upon Italian
and chose two topics to teach them basic
foods such as pizza, pasta, ice‐cream and
tomatoes as well as colours.
We prepared for the lessons with guidance
from Mrs Loxley in our elecve periods
and free‐me, meeng up a lot to discuss
various ideas. Aer a lot of thought we
decided to do 4 games to teach the pupils:
Kim’s Game, Dominoes, Bingo and Pairs.
We all chose a game each to make and
teach and then made them unique with
our personal choices.
Abbey Park First School was our first
experience of teaching and overall, we
enjoyed the exhilarang experience of
teaching for the first me . It was nerve
wracking at the beginning but rewarding
for both us and the pupils. At Defford
cum‐Besford school we were even sung
the “Thank you ”song.
Overall, the FLLA has made us all gain
confidence and it has been a fantasc
experience throughout. I would
recommend this elecve to any budding
linguist.
Holocaust Memorial Day
New Faces needed for Carnival’s Future
The future of the carnival could be under threat due to a lack of new members.
The commiee is urgently seeking new members following a number of resignaons last
year and the death of town councillor David Shaw recently which has le the group
depleted.
Everything has been put in place to run the carnival this year on 27th May but concern has
been raised for subsequent years.
Pupils marked Holocaust Memorial Day
with a number of guests, amongst them
Pershore MP Harrie Baldwin, music star
Mayorathon— Tuesday 12th March—Leer received from Charles
Tucker, Pershore Town Mayor
This is to say a big thank you to
you and your students, for taking
part in last week’s Mayorathon in
Pershore Bapst Church.
It all looked so effortless on the
day, but I’m sure that you had put
in hours and days of preparaon.
I really enjoyed the variety of the
readings and the confidence
shown by the students. I hope
they enjoyed reading as much as
we did listening to them. I
parcularly liked the poem at the
end.
All told, we raised over £1200 for
the Acquired Aphasia Trust and
the Acquired Brain Injury
Educaon Service. Thank you so
much for your contribuons and
donaons. Any money
outstanding, please send a
cheque
Street, Pershore, WR10 1DS.
Thank you again – who knows, we could
do it again.
‘The Mayorathon’
So I agreed to stand up here
And read a lile ‘piece’
Of anything I wanted to
from north, south, west or east
I didn’t think much of it
Talking for cause
Poems, novels, short stories
And maybe even more
The problem was I couldn’t choose
The choices far too many
Mr Spice had told me ‘anything’
But what help was that, if any!
And then he told me of my ‘skill’
In wring many poems
So upon the bus I did sit down
And to this I owe him!
The bright cold day has come at last
And I now before you stand
To read my small aempt
And try to steady shaky hands
I may not be a prodigy
In poetry nor wring
But thank you all for listening
And let get injury fighng!
Last Chapter for Librarian Carol Smith
Carol Smith the schools librarian for
nearly two decades rered in December.
Carol said “it had been a privilege to work
with staff and students”. She recalled “I
remember my first day. Originally, it
was a job share with a lady who had
been there for 30 years so that was an
inmidang posion to be in. Every day is
different. The school runs to a roune but
the library is quite different, with people
coming in and out at all mes of the day. It
was a lovely me and a privilege to be
there. I have three grown up children and
they all went to Pershore”. She also stated
“It’s been a delight at the school working
with the staff and students and I was really
humbled by the amount of good wishes I
received. It was just amazing”.
Headteacher Clive Corbe said: “I joined
Pershore High School on the same day as
Carol in January 1996. Over those 17 years
she gave magnificent service to the school
and will be sorely missed. I would like to
wish her and her husband, Don, a long and
happy rerement together”.
House News
Armstrong
This me last year I offered you a rhyme
And I shall do so again as we approach
Easter Time.
The months have passed quickly, but it
seems the weather has not
We’ve had wind, rain and snow – not just
a bit, but a lot!
Students have had trips in the UK, Europe,
Zambia and the States
Learning valuable lessons and spending
me with their mates.
House council have met with enthusiasm
and voice
And money has been allocated to the
charies of your choice.
Rewards have been plenty – well done to
you all –
House Points, Commendaons and the
occasional day out of school!
Keep working hard and aiming to be the
best
Individual efforts keep the Armstrong
Team ahead of the rest!
For those in Years 11 and higher exams are
closing in
Time to knuckle down and let the revision
begin!
Yes, you should be doing some to work
(although I know some of you won’t!)
But take the chance over Easter to relax as
well; you’ll regret it if you don’t!
And finally then, remember please that we
return on a Tuesday Week 2
And with that ‘Happy Easter’ is all there is
le to say to all of you!
Miss Bliss
Mrs Taylor
Work Experience
Well done to all Year 10
students who successfully completed their
work experience placements. We have had
some fantasc feedback from employers
and two of our students have wrien
about their opportunies.
‘For my work experience placement I went
to the Elgar School of Music in Worcester.
It is not a school like Pershore High, but
one where music groups and music lessons
are run. No day was the same and some
days were busier than others. I helped out
at the Music Library, visited Stourbridge to
see a possible new venue for the English
Symphony Orchestra and also filed reports.
The week was hecc and ring but
worthwhile and interesng to be a part of.’
Holly May Lawley
‘I managed to secure a fabulous
opportunity to work with the design team
at Miss Selfridge in London. They allowed
me to work hands on with developing
ideas for London Fashion Week. Some of
my ideas were implemented and I was
allowed to work on some of their future
designs. On my last day I was able to
aend the London Fashion Week and
saw many of the famous names in
fashion from all over the world. I was
also given some beauful clothes to
remember the week.’
Jessica Evans
Tea with the Head
Students who do well in their progress
checks and reports are invited to a
special event – tea with the Head. Ellie
Walters Mabbo shares her views of this
event here.
‘On Friday 1 st March students from Years
8,9,10 and 11 got the opportunity to
have a tea party with Mr Corbe to
celebrate our fantasc progress checks
and reports. When we got into the
training room in the library we were
treated to drinks, cakes and cookies. We
had the chance to discuss any problems
or situaons concerned around school
life with him. It was good to get a treat
for our efforts and hopefully we’ll have
the opportunity to do it again.’
A visit to Parliament
May Sanders was one of our Youth
Councillors who visited the Houses of
Parliament earlier this month. ‘We
travelled down by train and it was a
treat to have monitors in the back of
the seats to watch comedy, news and
drama! When we arrived in London, we
made our way to the Houses of
Parliament and were searched before
we were allowed to enter the buildings.
We were taken on a tour around the
buildings and I was very impressed
when I went into the House of
Commons and was able to walk into the
debang chamber. I have seen it oen
on TV but standing in the room made it
seem very special. I met Harriet
Baldwin, our local MP, and thoroughly
enjoyed a really interesng day.’
By the me you read this
we will be into the last half term of the
House compeon for this academic year.
It is crucial that absolutely everyone pulls
their weight in this next half term to ensure
that we improve on our performance last
year and challenge the seemingly invincible
Armstrong House. Only with everyone
doing their bit can we hope to challenge for
the top spot. Year 11 students only have
about 4 weeks le to make their
contribuon so don’t be shy, do the deed,
get the points and get them signed off.
Current Tutor Group scores:
A thought for Year 11
The harder you work now the beer you are
likely to perform in your final
Examinaons, the beer you perform the
more choices you will have for next year,
the more choices you have the more
control you have over your own desny. If
you don’t try you are likely to
underperform your choices will be
reduced, you will have very lile control
over your own desny because you will
only be able to do what someone else will
let you do, not necessarily what you would
like to do.
Revision Tips:
Make a metable for revising and sck
to it.
Don't waste me revising what you
know you are good at, concentrate on
areas of weakness.
Just reading things is probably the least
effecve way of revising; make sure you
write things down as you do it.
Have a go at doing some past exam
quesons under exam condions.
Make up some flash cards with key
words and phrases on them.
Use the BBC Bitesize and My Pershore
web sites as a source of informaon.
If you need something explaining again
ask your teachers for extra help.
Meet with your friends and revise
together.
When you are revising make sure you
concentrate on what you are doing,
there should be no other distracons.
Keep yourself fed and watered, it will
help you to concentrate.
Don't overdo it, lile and oen is beer.
Have a good Easter break and come back
safe and ready to do what needs to be
done.
Important information about term time absence
Changes have been made to
the guidelines provided by
Worcestershire County Council
relang to the authorisaon of term
me absence for holidays.
The naonal regulaons governing
student aendance make it clear
that parents do not have any right
or entlement to take a child out of
school for the purposes of a term‐me
holiday. Holidays during term me
should be seen as an excepon to the
norm and term me absence should
not be authorised unless there are
exceponal circumstances.
The Headteacher will be responsible for
deciding what constutes exceponal
circumstances and each request for term‐
me absence will be considered on an
individual basis.
An exceponal circumstance is likely to be:
● a one‐off, unique situaon such as,
a parent, grandparent or other close
relave is seriously ill and the holiday
proposed is likely to be the last such
holiday;
● there may have been a significant
trauma in the family recently and the
Headteacher might consider that an
immediate holiday might enable the
child concerned to beer deal with
the situaon;
● the holiday might be a unique,
one‐off never‐to‐be‐repeated
occasion which can only take place at
the me requested.
The cheaper cost of holidays in term
me will not be accepted as an
exceponal circumstance.
Any queries relang to term me
absence requests should be directed
to the House Administrator
(telephone numbers on page 2).
School Uniform Vouchers
An allowance may be available for
essenal school uniform. In the most
recent financial year, the essenal
uniform allowance was available only
for a limited range of items.
Grants are considered only for children
from the date they would start school
under the County Council’s standard
admissions policy and later when they
move on to each stage of schooling.

The second part of the acceptance
criteria is that the child/children named
have to be starng or transferring to a
new school. A maximum of two vouchers
per child will be supplied. The value of the
vouchers varies slightly depending on
what the voucher is for and the age of the
child/children concerned. The vouchers
can be exchanged for school uniform in
approved stores. A list of the relevant
names is supplied with the vouchers.
The scheme is subject to revision each
year.
