Eco Group Slimbridge Wildlife Trust Visit I think Slimbridge was fun and educaonal. I liked the animals and the birds, especially the oers, the nenes and the cranes the cranes were doing their courtship dance. I liked it when we fed the oers, the mum and two babies. The nenes came running up to us and when we went to play in the park and Miss told us to come back, the nenes came running up to her. By providing a real and live SET project, Go4SET raises the pupils’ awareness and provides personal development in team working and project management. The team met every week during lunchmes and worked together to plan, design and build their project. Each member of the team worked to their strengths and helped produce a report, display and model to be proud of. On 5 th March 2013 the Go4SET Team were invited to the Celebraon and Assessment Day at RAF Cosford. Bethany Neal, Will Parry, Erin Young, Oliver Charles, Ross Davis and Kieran Rusher took part in a ten week project set by the EDT for schools from across the West Midlands. The team aended the Launch Day back in November where they chose their project entled ‘Create Sport’. Their challenge was to design a new, creave and innovave sports centre. They were supported in this challenge by First Year students from Worcester University. The 10 week environmental The team was commended for their innovave design and received the Naonal award in recognion of their valuable contribuon to the Go4SET project. Mrs Riding 8
English Lancaster Writing Awards Extracts of a leer received from John Schad Professor of Modern Literature and Head of Department County College University of Lancaster I am delighted to inform you that the work of one of your students, Gareth Roberts, has been long‐listed for the Lancaster Wring Awards for Crical Wring and Ficon. We had a very strong field of submissions (121 in all), and this student’s work has been chosen as one of only nine to be long‐listed in each of those categories. The standard of the work submied was high, so he is to be congratulated on this achievement. The long‐list from each category will now go forward for short‐lisng: three pieces of work in each category will be selected by the end of April, and the winners will be announced at our sixth‐form conference early in July. We are planning on announcing the long‐list for each category (crical wring, ficon, poetry) on our web‐site later this week. The Three Counties Debating Competition On 6 th March, we intrepidly ventured out to Malvern College for the Three Counes Debang compeon. With just fieen minutes to prepare speeches, and no less than eight teams, the compeon was fierce. There were three debates during the day on subjects as diverse as “This House Would Raise the Drinking Age to 21” and “This House Believes Religion Has No Place In Schools”. But by 3.00pm the final was ready. Four teams were through; Bromsgrove, Pershore High School and two teams from Malvern College. The debate was on “This House Would Invest in Sending Men to Other Planets”. Guinness World Record Attempt On 6 th February 2013, 46 students and Mrs Merre from the English Department took part in an aempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most people wring the same story simultaneously at different venues. The project was called ‘Parallel Universes’ the opening of the story, which parcipants were given, was linked to this theme. By wring up to a maximum of two sentences each, the group were asked to connue the narrave one by one. Currently, the record stands at 953 parcipants in 5 different venues, but with over 100 schools involved Despite a tense final the victory went to Bromsgrove School. All in all this was a hugely enjoyable experience and we look forward to entering another team next year. this me, there is a good chance that this could be broken. Fingers crossed.
