PROJECT With its restored Tiffany fixtures and selective use of LEDs, the renovated Belasco Theatre is again the jewel in Broadway’s crown BY VILMA BARR AND ELLEN LAMPERT-GRÉAUX A STAR IS REBORN Photo: Whitney Cox Theatrical lore has it that Manhattan’s Belasco Theatre is haunted, and that the ghost of fabled showman and playwright David Belasco still appears backstage, watching over his former home. Perhaps, now that the theater has undergone a $14.5 million restoration, Belasco’s ghost can bask in the glow of the restored Tiffany stained-glass fixtures, satisfied that the theater bearing his name once again glitters on Broadway. With seating for 1,000, the circa 1907 building was designed in neo- Georgian style by George Keister, a well-known theatrical architect of the early 20 th century. Belasco maintained a duplex apartment in the building’s northeast tower. For 23 years after its opening, Belasco produced and directed more than 50 shows, many of which he also wrote, introducing such actors as Humphrey Bogart to New York theatergoers. Through the decades following Belasco’s death in 1931, the theater presented such classics as Follies, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter and Oh, Calcutta! The restoration and general improvement of the lighting in the Belasco was “a key element” in the recent renovation, says architect Francesca Russo, who oversaw the project for The Shubert Organization, which has owned the theater since 1948. “The overall lighting in the theater is very artistic and many of the fixtures were created by Tiffany Studios following Belasco’s instructions,” she recounts.
