Switzerland offers similar products to Austria with its mix of spa and winter tourism<br />

opportunities. There are 164 medium to large well-known ski resorts and numerous health<br />

resorts and sp<strong>as</strong>. Popular destinations include Adelboden, Appenzellerland,<br />

Engadine/Scuol, Valai/Leukerbad, Weggis, Lucerne, Morschach, Vitznau, Davos, Klosters,<br />

St. Moritz, T<strong>as</strong>ch, Zermatt, Verbiee and La Tzoumaz.<br />

Spain is similar to France with its spa and winter tourism offerings. It h<strong>as</strong> more than 2000<br />

registered thermal springs, 90 baths and 120 spa resorts. It also provides 837 kilometers of<br />

ski runs in the popular resorts of Formigal, Baqueira Beret and Sierra Nevada. Other popular<br />

destinations include Ri<strong>as</strong> Baix<strong>as</strong>, Baneario de Archena, Mar Menor, Lanjaron, Balneario de<br />

Arnedillo, Balneario de Fitero, Balneario de Fortuna, Balneario de Ledesma and Balneario<br />

de Lugo.<br />

Greece h<strong>as</strong> 75 professional spa and bathing centers, and 19 ski resorts suitable for amateur<br />

skiers. Popular destinations include Kaimaktsalan, Kellaria, Fterolakos, V<strong>as</strong>silitsa, Helmos,<br />

Chania, Heraklion, L<strong>as</strong>ithi, Mykonos, Naxos, Rhodes, Santorini, Sifnos and Tinos. Like<br />

Greece, Cyprus offers a relatively small number of spa resorts (approximately 20).<br />

Although Western Europe h<strong>as</strong> dominated the spa and winter tourism industry in terms of<br />

quality, expenditures and tourism numbers, countries of the former Soviet Union are<br />

adapting well, b<strong>as</strong>ed particularly on their tradition of health tourism and sanatoria, to the<br />

needs of Western European wellness tourists. The same can also be said with their medical<br />

tourism sector with large numbers of private patients travelling from west to e<strong>as</strong>t for dental<br />

work and surgery.<br />

Hungary h<strong>as</strong> become particularly well-known for its spa tourism industry comprising 59 spa<br />

hotels and 55 wellness centers. The country apparently h<strong>as</strong> the world’s fifth largest supply of<br />

thermal waters with 1289 hot springs. Popular destinations include Budapest, Buk, Heviz,<br />

Eger, Harkani, Gyula, Zalakaros, Lenti, Mako, Gunar<strong>as</strong>, Miscolz, Debrecen, Dombovar-<br />

Gunar<strong>as</strong>, Hajduszoboszlo and Sarvar.<br />

The Czech Republic h<strong>as</strong>, similarly to Hungary, become a major spa destination for Western<br />

European tourists in recent years. Although many people may only have heard of Karlovy<br />

Vary, the country h<strong>as</strong> 176 sp<strong>as</strong>, many located in and around some 40 spa towns. Other<br />

popular destinations include Podebrady, Marianske Lazne, Frantiskovy Lazne, Jachymov,<br />

Bechyne, Darkov, Vraz, Konstantinovy Lazne, Janske Lazne, Jesenik and Luhacovice.<br />

With their accession to the European Union in 2008, both Romania and Bulgaria have<br />

incre<strong>as</strong>ed in popularity for spa and winter tourism.<br />

Geographically closer to Armenia, Russia and Georgia also provide winter and spa tourism<br />

destinations. According to the <strong>Tourism</strong> Development <strong>Strategy</strong> of the Russian Federation,<br />

there are around 150 functioning ski resorts located largely in central Russia, the Povolzhye<br />

Region (near the Volga River), Altay, Ural and Cauc<strong>as</strong>us regions, the Kolski and Kamchatka<br />

peninsul<strong>as</strong>, and around Lake Baikal. Famous mineral water resorts are located in<br />

Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Zheleznovodsk (the Cauc<strong>as</strong>us), Vladivostok, the Kamchatka and<br />

Karelia regions, near the Black Sea, the Altai River and Lake Baikal.<br />

Georgia h<strong>as</strong> two ski resorts centered at Bakuriani and Gudauri and a number of mineral<br />

water resorts, the most popular being located in the Borjomi, Ab<strong>as</strong>tumani, Nunisi, Sairme,<br />

Ckhaltubo, Beshumi, Shovi and Zekari regions.<br />
