More than 280 employees were recognized for giving a total of 3,390 years of service to the medical center at the fifty-third annual banquet. Photos of employees receiving five through forty year pins will be featured in the June issue of The VitaLink. MRMC Hosts Conferences The Middle Tennessee Mammography Society held its spring seminar at the medical center on April 24. More than 80 mammography technologists attended the event. Featured speakers included Dr. Gary Podgorski, a specialist in radiology on the medical staff at MRMC, and Dana Salters, women’s center coordinator. Maury Regional also hosted the Tennessee Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (TACVPR) spring seminar on April 27. Approximately 60 cardiovascular and pulmonary professionals from throughout the state attended the conference. Drs. Ali Fathi and Kevin Maquiling, specialists in cardiology on the medical staff, were two of the guest speakers at the event. More than 500 community members took advantage of the free blood pressure, skin cancer, oxygen saturation readings, and peripheral vascular screenings as well as health information offered by the medical center. More than 130 blood pressures were taken. THE VITALINK Organizational Announcement Karen McCombs has accepted the position of director of organizational development. Prior to coming to MRMC, McCombs served as learning consultant for MeadWestvaco, assistant vice president of curriculum development for the Institute of Internal Auditors and manager of education and training for QualChoice of University Hospital Health Care System in Cleveland, Ohio. “We are pleased to have Karen join Maury Regional and the management team. Her experience in learning and organizational development, talent management, process improvement and curriculum development will guide MRMC in continued personal and professional growth for all employees,” said Vice President of Human Resources Kaye Brewer. McCombs has a master’s degree in educational counseling and psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has completed her coursework towards her Ph.D. in Human Resource Development from The Ohio State University. As director of organizational development, McCombs will oversee the functions of the organizational development department including the personal development academy, house-wide training initiatives and leadership development. White Rose Program Implemented Maury Regional began the White Rose program, a way of honoring the death of a patient and consoling the family, according to Rebecca Payne-Duke, pastoral care. The program was initiated in March in the Critical Care and Oncology units. After a death, Pictured with Payne-Duke (standing) are volunteers (l-r) Barbara McDavid, Betty Smith and Pam Williamson. a white silk rose with a sympathy card signed by the staff who cared for the patient is given to the family as a keepsake. “We have several volunteers who donate their time to assemble the roses and sympathy cards,” said Payne-Duke. “Both staff and family members have commented on the positive impact that this program has made.” EMS Expo Held at Columbia State Maury Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Vanderbilt LifeFlight and Columbia State Community College (CSCC) hosted the ninth annual EMS Night Out Helicopter and Safety Expo on Tuesday, May 18 at CSCC. The EMS Night Out Helicopter Expo consists of emergency aircraft exhibits from Vanderbilt LifeFlight, Air-Evac Lifeteam, Tennessee Highway Patrol, and Metro Nashville Police Department as well as numerous other public safety agencies.
