Accomplishments and AdvancementsCANCERSERVICESThe Cancer Center added newtechnology to enhance theprecision of radiation therapyfor cancer patients this pastyear. The Varian® On-BoardImager® (OBI) makes dynamictargeting image-guidedradiation therapy (IGRT) moreefficient and convenient. The system delivers improvedtumor targeting using highresolution, low dose digitalimaging in the treatment room.By having the best possibleimage information, physiciansand staff are able to make timelydecisions and obtain exactalignment, which is criticalwhen delivering high dosesof radiation. OBI providesthe tools to manage changesin position caused by set-upconditions as well as changesin position during a patient’streatment session because ofnormal respiratory and organmotion. This enables physicians and staff to confidentlymanage patients and target movement—both before andduring treatments.OBI is the latest tool added for radiation treatment ofcancer and complements intensity modulated radiationtherapy (IMRT) and brachytherapy. In addition, theMaury Regional Cancer Center was the first in the stateto utilize the Dose Verification System® for the treatmentof breast cancer and is accredited by the Commission onCancer of the American College of Surgeons.—6—

HEART SERVICESMRMC has continued to advance its heart services. Themedical center has received full three-year accreditationwith Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) fromthe Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), havingadvanced its chest pain center accreditation fromLevel II to Level III—the highest level attainable. Inaddition, the medical center also attained heart failureaccreditation from the SCPC following a stringentreview.MRMC provides a comprehensive array of cardiacservices, including interventional procedures toopen blockages, electrophysiology services such aspacemakers and defibrillators, and cardiothoracicsurgery through a partnership with Vanderbilt Heartthat includes off-pump procedures. The time it takes for a patient to go from the EmergencyDepartment to the catheterization lab at MRMC—commonly referred to in health care as door-to-balloontime—is nearly half the nationally recommended90 minutes. In addition to traditional interventionalprocedures in which the catheter to open a blockedvessel is inserted in the leg, the physicians on themedical staff also perform transradial procedures inwhich the catheter is inserted through the wrist, whichoffers patients who qualify the ability to be back ontheir feet almost immediately and resume most normalactivities the next day.Surgical procedures include bypass surgery, includingoff-pump procedures, transmyocardial laserrevascularization in which laser channels are createdinto the heart muscle enabling new blood vessels toform, minimally invasive valve surgery, and the Mazeprocedure which is a highly complex surgical treatmentoption for atrial fibrillation.—7—

HOME SERVICESMaury Regional Home Services has hada stellar year, including another nationalranking by HomeCare Elite as one of thetop 25 percent of home care agencies inAmerica. Home Services is also ranked thirdin the state by HealthInsight, a private, nonprofitorganization that evaluates home careagencies.Patient outcomes are better than state andnational averages in 11 measures and patientsatisfaction scores are at the 100 th percentile, resulting in a Top Performer award byProfessional Research Consultants, a premiermarketing research organization.Maury Regional Home Services providesquality health care to patients at home, working closely with physicians to establishunique care plans for their patients. Servicesinclude nursing care, rehabilitation services, home infusion and medical social workers.—8—

ORTHOPEDIC SERVICESMRMC has continued to advance its orthopedic services. The latest advancements include implementing the OwnThe Bone TM program and the use of surgical instrumentscustomized for a patient’s anatomy.MRMC is the first in Tennessee to implement theAmerican Orthopedic Association’s Own the Bone TMprogram, aimed to better identify, evaluate and treatpatients that suffer from an osteoporosis or low bonedensity-related fragility. The medical center was treatingnumerous patients over the age of 50 with fractures, most often the result of poor bone density caused byosteoporosis. The goal was to take steps to reduce futurefractures for these at-risk patients by getting themscheduled for a bone density scan to determine the extentof the disease, prescribing calcium and osteoporosismedications, and providing nutritional consultations witha registered dietitian. The Own the Bone TM program is anational Web-based quality improvement registry that—9—incorporates 10 measures for reducing future fractures andprovides MRMC with immediate feedback on programperformance to measure the medical center’s successand helps benchmark MRMC against other institutions. Results can be immediately quantified and health careproviders can begin to see how their actions are positivelyaffecting patient care.Orthopedic surgeons on the medical staff were amongthe first in Tennessee to utilize systems to build surgicalinstruments for knee replacements that are customizedfor a patient’s unique knee anatomy. The technology usesa patient’s magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uploadedto a software program that provides the surgeon withprecise three dimensional computer imagery of the kneeto design and build surgical instruments with the goal ofreducing trauma and blood loss to surrounding tissue andto enhance alignment of the knee replacement.

WOMEN’S CENTERIn the past year, the medical center has continuedto advance its services for diagnosing and treatingbreast cancer. While breast MRI has been available foryears, the medical center implemented a new digitalDynaCAD technology that enables physicians to obtainhigher quality images, which aids in diagnosing benignbreast disease and assists in treatment planning forbreast cancer patients. The American Cancer Societyrecommends breast MRI as a screening tool for womenwhose risk of developing breast cancer is 20 percentabove average. Risk factors include a family history ofbreast cancer in a close relative, a positive genetic testfor breast cancer, and chest radiation for Hodgkin’sdisease. In addition, the Women’s Center now utilizes a newbreast biopsy system to safely and quickly biopsy whatis seen under MRI guidance. This state-of-the-art,vacuum-assisted technology allows a larger, more intacttissue sample to be taken, which increases the accuracy—10—for diagnosis. This procedure requires no post-biopsystitches, allowing patients to return to most dailyactivities immediately following the biopsy. The systemalso has a unique device feature that allows continuousdelivery of local anesthetic during the biopsy procedureto increase patient comfort and ultimately keep thepatient’s safety and health as the highest priority. These new tools added at the Maury Regional Women’sCenter complement digital mammography, breastultrasound and stereotactic biopsy. In addition, the Maury Regional Cancer Center was the first inTennessee to utilize the Dose Verification System® forbreast cancer patients. This system allows physiciansto measure the precise amount of radiation deliveredto the location where the tumor was removed by usingan implantable device that measures radiation doses. The center also offers brachytherapy that delivers highdose radiation directly to the area where the tumor isremoved.
