Foundation’s Art Effects
sets sales record
Art Effects held in August was a tremendous success for the Maury Regional
Health Care Foundation, according to Executive Director Joe K. Kilgore.
In its fifth year, Art Effects set a sales record at $46,693.25, an increase of 21 percent.
Profits increased 34 percent from last year, bringing in $21,650 from 30 percent
of sales and additional sponsorships.
“The funds we raise at this event are earmarked for the community health fund
and enable us to assist underserved populations in our region. These needs continue
to grow, so we are pleased with the outcome of this event. I would like to thank the
participating artists, the Art Effects committee and event volunteers for their roles in
helping us serve others,” said Kilgore.
Art Effects featured more than 30 artists whose works included paintings, pottery,
stained glass and jewelry.
Fifth annual NICU reunion planned
Families who received care in MRMC’s Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit (NICU) will be attending the fifth annual reunion on Saturday,
September 24. The event will take place from 3-5 p.m. at Pleasant
Heights Baptist Church, located at 2712 Trotwood Avenue in
Columbia.
“There truly is a special relationship that develops between
our staff members and the patients we serve,” said Nurse Manager
Amanda Ingram, NICU. “Our entire staff looks forward each year to
reuniting with children who have been patients of our unit. It is so
rewarding to see how the children have changed over the past year
and to renew our bond with their families.”
Maury Regional’s NICU, in a partnership with Vanderbilt
Children’s Hospital, began serving patients in October of 2006. The
eight-bed neonatal intensive care unit is staffed with nine physicians,
eight neonatal nurse practitioners and 27 registered nurses
specially trained to provide a higher level of newborn care. The
unit’s state-of-the-art equipment includes a cardiac monitoring
system, ventilators, intensive care isolettes and electronic patient
documentation for physicians.
Women Helping Women
addresses breast cancer
post-surgery recovery
The Maury Regional Women’s Center hosted a free
Women Helping Women luncheon program on Wednesday,
August 17.
Pamela Ludwig, a registered nurse and founder of
Pretty in Pink Boutique, discussed advancements in breast
cancer post-surgical recovery including the latest in prosthetics
and compression garments. “Women facing breast
cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery have unique
needs in order to maintain their comfort, femininity and
dignity,” said Ludwig. “A wide variety of products are now
available to help breast cancer survivors not only be comfortable
but also regain their confidence.”
Pretty in Pink Boutique has several locations in
Middle Tennessee and anticipates the opening of a new location
inside the Maury Regional Women’s Center this fall,
according to Dana Salters, women’s services coordinator.
The new boutique will offer a non-clinical, fun environment
for women recovering from breast cancer to receive
custom fitting for garments that match their body shape,
type of surgery and lifestyle needs. Breast forms, undergarments,
compression garments, headwear, swimwear and
pink ribbon items are among the merchandise women can
Spirit of
Planetree
One of the key components of patientcentered
care revolves around the importance
of family, friends and social support. Relationships
and support are vital to good health.
Critical Care has embraced this philosophy
and has taken steps to provide this environment
for patients and those who support
them. Among the initiatives that Critical Care
has implemented are:
• Open visitation: Critical Care now offers
visitation at most hours of the day. The only
time that visitation is restricted is 6:30-8:30
a.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m., to allow physicians
and staff to conduct care rounds and ensure
the privacy and confidentiality of patients
in the process.
• Code Blue: Family members or patient support
person(s) who choose to be present at
a code (resuscitation efforts) are accompanied
by a member of the nursing staff who
explains what is happening and provides
support.
• CaringBridge: The medical center partnered
with CaringBridge, a free Web
service that enables family and friends to
connect and share information and support
during a health crisis, treatment and
recovery. Loved ones can create a personal
Web site that enables them to post a journal
on the patient’s condition and allows others
to post messages of support.
“In Critical Care, we serve patients and
their loved ones during very stressful times.
We have taken steps to provide them support
and help minimize that stress,” said Nurse
Manager Ginger Earnest.
FOX IS A WELLNESS SUCCESS STORY
For most of us, life can be hectic as we juggle work,
family, spiritual and social activities. Unfortunately, what
we often sacrifice in the process is devoting time to maintaining
our health. Chad Fox, an employee in Plant Operations,
knows this all too well.
“I enjoy a lot of outdoor activities and would find myself
having to stop and catch my breath. Things I could do
when I was younger, I couldn’t do anymore,” said Fox.
That is when he made a change and dedicated more
time and effort to maintaining his health. In February
2011, he weighed 231 pounds and set a weight goal of 210
pounds.
“I made a total lifestyle change in my diet and exercise.
I began counting calories—staying below 2,000—and exercised
three to four times a week in the Wellness Center.
The first two weeks were difficult and the hardest part
was the commitment. I cut out sugar, ate more protein,
watched my portion sizes and made better choices like fish
and shrimp,” said Fox.
He exceeded his goal, losing 60 pounds, and currently
weighs 175 pounds. Fox says that he feels better, has more
energy and has reduced his blood pressure medication. He
is slowly mixing more carbohydrates back into his diet and
continues to exercise two to three times each week. At 6’2”,
he would like to maintain his weight around 180 pounds.
While he now eats almost anything he wants, he continues
to watch his portion sizes and makes smarter choices like
foods that are grilled or baked instead of fried.
When asked about the secret to his success, he responded,
“You’ve got to want to make a change to be successful
and it’s not a short-term change. It’s changing your
lifestyle, having self-discipline, staying active and sticking
to it.”
Special congratulations to those departments
who were able to achieve Five Star status for the
entire 2011 fiscal year:
