Maury Regional Medical Center March 2010 Vol. XXIX, Issue 3
therapy to patients.
Breast Cancer Detection Enhanced with New MRI Technology
On March 22, Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) began using new technology to conduct magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) procedures of the breast.
“MRI is very successful in detecting invasive breast cancer. While we have been conducting breast MRI for
years, this new digital DynaCAD technology enables us to obtain higher
quality images, aids in diagnosing benign breast disease and assists
in treatment planning for breast cancer patients,” said Bill Sutter,
MD, radiologist and chief of staff.
The American Cancer Society recommends breast MRI as a screening
tool for women whose risk of developing breast cancer is 20 percent
above average. Risk factors include a family history of breast cancer in
a close relative (mother, sister, or daughter), a positive genetic test for
breast cancer, and chest radiation for Hodgkin’s disease. For those who
meet high-risk criteria for screening, Medicare and most commercial
insurance will cover the cost of the MRI.
This is the latest tool added at the Maury Regional Women’s Center
to aid in the detection and treatment of breast cancer. This technology
complements digital mammography, breast ultrasound and stereotactic
biopsy.
Maury Regional Cancer Center Adds New Technology
The Maury Regional Cancer Center has added new technology to enhance the
precision of radiation therapy for cancer patients, according to radiation oncologist
Michael Sattasiri, M.D.
“The rate at which new technology becomes available for the treatment of cancer
is promising. The addition of this new imaging system will provide us with even
greater accuracy in the delivery of radiation therapy,” said Dr. Sattasiri.
The Varian ® On-Board Imager ® (OBI) makes dynamic targeting image-guided
radiation (IGRT) more efficient and convenient. The system delivers improved tumor
targeting using high resolution, low dose digital imaging in the treatment room. OBI
provides the tools to manage changes in position caused by day-to-day set-up conditions
as well as changes in position during a patient’s treatment session because
of normal respiratory and organ motion. This enables physicians and staff to confidently
manage patients and target movement—both before and during treatments.
Joel Kochanski, M.D., a radiation oncologist in the cancer center adds, “The
use of this new imaging can result in better image quality than traditional megavoltage
imaging. By having the best possible image information, we are able to make
timely decisions and obtain exact alignment, which is critical when delivering high
doses of radiation.”
The Maury Regional Cancer Center will begin using this new technology at the end of the month. OBI is the latest tool added
for radiation treatment of cancer and complements intensity modulated radiation therapy and brachytherapy. In addition,
see Cancer Technology, page 6
MRMC Recognizes Volunteers
The Auxiliary Service Awards Banquet
was held on February 23 to recognize volunteers
for their service to the medical center.
In 2009, 441 auxiliary members gave
a total of 67,368 service hours. Auxiliary
members received pins at the banquet in
recognition of the hours of service they
completed (see photos on page 5).
Human Resources helped to determine
the volunteers’ estimated pay rates based
on recent market figures and multiplied that
by the number of hours volunteered. A symbolic
check in the amount of $727,574 was
presented to CEO Robert Otwell representing
hours rendered.
Volunteers Elsie Price and Janey Walters received the pins for the most
hours served. Walters has volunteered for the auxiliary for 55 years and received
her 24,000 hour pin. Price has been a volunteer for 31 years and
received her 25,000 hour pin.
MRMC Pharmacy Update
As of March 1, the MRMC pharmacy
is now able to electronically file
prescription claims for any employee
and dependents covered through
the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee
(BCBST) group health plan
offered by MRMC. Once a claim has
been received by BCBST, it will be
processed automatically and any reimbursement
will be sent out within
10 to 14 business days. While retail
pharmacies began this process
January 1, any prescription filled at
the MRMC pharmacy prior to March
1 will still need to be manually submitted
to BCBST. Prescription claim
forms are available on the intranet
under Departments / Human Resources
Palliative Care Fund Established
A new fund was approved by the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation
Board in February. According to Foundation Executive Director Joe Kilgore, Sue
MacArthur, director of clinical education at MRMC, started the Palliative Care
Fund with a generous donation in memory of her mother, Rose Kosinski.
Palliative care improves the quality of life for patients and their families facing
life-threatening illness, through the prevention, assessment and treatment of pain
and other physical, psychosocial and spiritual problems.
“My vision for the fund is for it to be used to build a new program of palliative
care which will help create an environment of calmness, comfort and accessibility
to patients and families at this crucial junction in life,” said MacArthur.
According to Kilgore, the Palliative Care Fund will be used for education of
the MRMC staff to build an internal group of experts in palliative care. It will also
MRMC Serves the Community
Several Maury Regional employees recently offered free health screenings
and provided health and wellness information to the community.
On Februrary 26, Chest Pain Coordinator Brenda Bishop provided free
blood pressure checks and heart health information to attendees of Kroger’s
Safety Week event. On March 6, Administrative Director of Women’s and Children’s
Services Pam Hibbs and several registered nurses provided educational
information and conducted free blood pressure screenings to more than 60
attendees at a Women’s Fair held in the local community. Some people were
identified at both events to have hypertension and, therefore, received further
counseling or were sent to the medical center to receive treatment.
provide funds to renovate an area of the medical center to meet the unique level
of care required at the end of life.
Request for monies from the Palliative Care Fund must be submitted to the
foundation in writing with details of how the funds are to be spent and what the
benefit will be to the medical center. The Foundation Allocations Committee will
review requests quarterly. Anyone may make donations in honor or in memory of
a loved one and designate the monies to the new Palliative Care Fund.
Fit Program Motivates Employees
Maury Regional’s Fittest of the Fit, a weight loss reward contest, has
motivated more than 450 employees to lose weight. The total weight lost
of participants who weighed in during the
week of March 8 was 2,067 pounds. The
greatest weight lost to date by an individual
is 32.4 pounds and the greatest percentage
lost is 13.56 percent. Participants
should sign up for the final weigh-in during
the week of April 12 via the intranet.
Pictured is Kristin Wayne, Fittest
grand prize winners will be announced and
a new incentive challenge will be revealed.
