THE VITALINKMaury Regional Medical Center March 2011 Vol. XXX, Issue 3MRMC offers new pacemakerThe Heart Center at Maury Regional Medical Center(MRMC) is the second hospital in Middle Tennessee toutilize a new pacemaker that allows patients to safely havemagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, according toAdministrative Director of Cardiovascular Services CathyMalone. The first procedure using this progressive technologywas conducted at the medical center on March 7 by KevinMaquiling, M.D., an interventional cardiologist on themedical staff.“MRI is frequently used for patients with spine anddisk disease, orthopedic injuries, and vascular disease. Many of our patients have avoided MRI studies because ofthe potential that the imaging procedure could interferewith the effective operation of their pacemaker. It’simportant to us to offer the latest technology, which givesour patients more options,” said Maquiling. The Revo MRI SureScan pacing system by Medtronic,Inc. is the first and only pacemaker in the U.S. specificallydesigned for use in an MRI environment and was approvedby the Food and Drug Administration in February.Previously, procedures for patients with implanted(See Pacemaker, page 4)Cancer Center advances technologyDr. Joel Kochanski is pictured describing thecapabilities of the Trilogy linear accelerator toa patient. The Cancer Center at MRMC now offers advanced technology forimage-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) for cancer. Radiation oncologistsMichael Sattasiri, M.D., and Joel Kochanski, M.D., now treat patientsusing the powerful new Trilogy linear accelerator and imaging systemfrom Varian Medical Systems, which make it possible to deliver a widerange of ultra-precise treatments with great speed.“This state-of-the-art system makes it possible for us to treatpatients with the most advanced radiotherapy techniques, using themost clinically efficient processes in the world,” said Dr. Sattasiri. “Itprovides us with more versatility and precision than we’ve ever had, forcustomizing treatments according to the specifics of each patient’s case.”At the core of the Trilogy system is Varian’s high-powered medicallinear accelerator, a machine that rotates around the patient to deliverradiation treatments from nearly any angle. THE VITALINKPRESTON RETIRESHarold Preston, CEO of Family Health Group (FHG),retired on February 18. Preston joined FHG in 2002 aschief financial officer and was promoted to CEO in 2008.“Harold has been an outstanding leader at FamilyHealth Group. He will be missed, but we wish him the bestin his retirement,” said MRMC CEO Robert Otwell.Cathy Cook, FHG chief operating officer, will serve asinterim CEO until Randy Wilmore assumes the position inMay.Left: CEO Robert Otwell; right: Harold PrestonCancer Center(Continued from page 1)also incorporates a multi-leaf collimator for shaping theradiation beam to match the three-dimensional shapeof the tumor, and an On-Board Imager device for fast, accurate, real-time tumor tracking and automated patientpositioning. The Trilogy system also includes cone-beam CTimaging technology to acquire a high-quality 3-D imageof the tumor and surrounding anatomy. During treatment, there are changes that occur in the position of the tumordue to normal physiological processes. By using 3-DCT imaging, physicians are able to make positioningadjustments and treat tumors with an enhanced level ofaccuracy, while sparing the healthy surrounding tissue.“The extraordinary power and flexibility of the Trilogysystem assures us that we can deliver a treatment plan thatgives our patients the best and most appropriate treatmentpossible,” said Dr. Kochanski. “By combining the mostpowerful radiotherapy treatment machine with high-Pacemaker(Continued from page 1)pacemakers were not recommended because these patientsmight face serious complications, such as interferencewith pacemaker operation, damage to system components, lead or pacemaker dislodgement or change in pacingcapture threshold. The Revo MRI pacing system, whenprogrammed into SureScan mode prior to an MRI scan, isdesigned to be used safely in the MRI environment. The number of patients with pacemakers is growing atthe same time that the use of MRI is increasing. It has beenestimated that there is a 50 to 75 percent probability thatcardiac device patients will need an MRI over the lifetimeof their devices. Furthermore, more than 200,000 patientsannually in the U.S. have to forego an MRI scan becausethey have a pacemaker. The Revo MRI SureScan pacingsystem can help address this important unmet patientneed.“Medical imaging and electronic implantable devicessuch as pacemakers are important technological advances,”said Malone. “Maury Regional is proud to provide patientssafer access to MRI. We encourage our patients to talk totheir doctor about which pacing system is right for them.”quality imaging, tracking, and monitoring devices, Trilogyallows us to deliver the most accurate treatments possiblein the shortest amount of time. That translates to betteroutcomes along with greater patient comfort, since patientsspend less time on the treatment table.”Dr. Michael Sattasiri is pictured reviewing the imaging andtreatment plan used to precisely treat cancer using the CTcone-beam technology.—4—
