Program Implemented to Reduce Bone Fractures
Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) is the first in Tennessee to implement
the American Orthopaedic Association’s Own the Bone Program, according to
Carey Albright, administrative director of orthopaedic and neurologic services.
The program is aimed to better identify, evaluate and treat patients that suffer
from an osteoporosis or low bone density-related fragility fracture (a broken bone
that results from a fall from standing height or less). The program brings focus to
the severe health implications of fragility fractures and the multi-faceted approach
hospitals can employ to ensure these patients receive the most comprehensive
care.
“We felt that it was vital to identify individuals at-risk in an effort to decrease Dr. Jeff Adams is pictured sharing
a model that demonstrates
the risk of fracture. With the help of physician leaders, we have successfully implemented
a program that will help individuals maintain a healthy active lifestyle,” the toll that osteoporosis can
said Carey Albright.
take on one’s bones over time,
Statistics surrounding this health issue are alarming. According to the National increasing the risk of fracture.
Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), up to 50 percent of all women and 25 percent of
men over the age of 50 years will sustain fragility fractures in their remaining lifetime.
Jeff Adams, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon, led the efforts to institute this program at MRMC.
“We are treating numerous patients over the age of 50 with fractures, most often the result of poor bone density
caused by osteoporosis. Our goal was to take steps to reduce future fractures for these at-risk patients. We schedsee
National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week
Maury Regional celebrated National Nurses Week on May 6-12 and National
Hospital Week on May 16-22. The medical center recognized these
weeks with a variety of activities for employees. The medical center held a
National Hospital Week meal (right) in both the cafeteria and the Auxiliary
Conference Room on May 20 and 22. Pictured at one of the events are transporters
(l-r) Ben Green, Josh Craig and Zach Gray.
To kick off Nurses Week, nursing staff were invited to attend an information
session on the Pathway to Excellence process on May 6. According
to the American Nurses Credentialing Center, Pathway to Excellence
is a designation earned by organizations with “best in class” practices. For
an organization to earn the Pathway to Excellence designation, it must
successfully undergo a thorough review process that documents foundational
quality initiatives in creating a positive work environment—as defined
by nurses and supported by research. Pictured at left are (seated)
Third West Nurse Manager Michele Craig, with (standing, left) Vickie
Kenney, physical therapist, and Andrea Poynter, clinical educator, at the
informational session.
As part of the Nurses Week celebration, the 2010 Nursing Awards
were held. Clinical Excellence Award winners were Jim Norton, Oncolo-
Retirement Plan Update
Earlier this year, the announcement was made that
our 403(b) vendor would be changing from Wells Fargo
to Lincoln Financial. We anticipate this change to occur during the summer
and plan to schedule group meetings in June and individual employee meetings
in August. This will give all employees the opportunity to learn more about
their own retirement plan and receive personalized advice on taking advantage
of this benefit. Retirement plan statements were recently mailed and can
assist you during the meetings.
If you have never taken the opportunity to enroll, now is a great time to
begin the process and start saving for the future as the 403(b) plan at MRMC
can offer several benefits:
• Contributions are “pre-tax,” in that they are withheld from your check
before your taxes are calculated.
• Taxes are paid on distributions in retirement which is a time when many
people are in a lower tax bracket.
• Maury Regional offers matching contributions to employees meeting
certain plan requirements.
Additional information on the dates and times of these meetings will be
e-mailed to employees. Additional information on the current plan can be
found in Human Resources or by contacting Lea Ables at extension 1968.
I didn’t know how we were going to make it.
When coworkers and the foundation came through,
it was an indescribable blessing.”
Nursing Scholarship is designed to assist a minority student, not already
employed at MRMC, with expenses involved in securing a bachelor’s degree
in nursing. In exchange, the scholarship recipient commits to work at the medical
center after graduation. The scholarship is made possible through the
General Fund of the foundation.
Own the Bone,
ule them for a bone density scan to
determine the extent of the disease,
prescribe calcium and osteoporosis
medications, and provide nutritional
consultations with a registered dietitian,”
said Adams.
Adams and the staff at MRMC
wanted to measure the effects of their
efforts and implemented the Own the
Bone Program. The Own the Bone
Program is a national Web-based
quality improvement registry that incorporates
10 measures for reducing
future fractures and provides MRMC
with immediate feedback on program
performance to measure the medical
center’s success and helps benchmark
MRMC against other institutions.
With Own the Bone, MRMC reduces
this huge treatment gap and ensures
that patients with fragility fractures are
screened and appropriately treated
for low bone density or osteoporosis.
“A comprehensive, multi-specialty
approach will greatly reduce repeat
fragility fractures for at-risk patients,”
said Douglas R. Dirschl, chair of the
American Orthopaedic Association’s
Critical Issues Committee. “Own the
Bone gives hospitals or clinics the
tools needed to address and curb this
major health crisis.”
