Pharmacy implements system toenhance patient safetyThe Maury Regional Medical Center Pharmacyimplemented a new automated inventorymanagement system designed to enhance patientsafety through the use of barcode technology.“Because we want to offer every patient thehighest quality of care every day, our medicalcenter has made a commitment to provideadditional safety for medication administration,”said Pharmacy Director Jeff Binkley, PharmD.“We partnered with Swisslog to implement aninnovative approach to packaging and inventorymanagement to enhance accuracy, efficiency andflexibility for dispensing medications.”The revolutionary Beacon system offerspharmacies the ability to better organizemedications, track real-time utilization andinventory and further advance patient safety. When orders for patients are sent to thepharmacy, they are entered into the computersystem. A pharmacy staff member then uses a—4—

color-coded dcomputer stationtiand accompanying scanner tolocate the medication in thepharmacy. To complete theorder, the staff member thenuses a scanner to read thebarcode on the medication. If the wrong medication isselected, the light on the storageunit begins to blink, a visualdisplay message alerts themthat the wrong product wasselected, and the computer willnot allow them to complete theorder. In most cases, a photoof the medication is displayedon screen as an added securitymeasure.A high-speed packager worksin conjunction with the systemand holds 320 canisters of fastmovingmedications at a time. The system will package andbarcode hundreds of unit andmulti-unit doses in minutes, thus saving the pharmacists’time and increasing patientsafety.“Maury Regional is dedicatedto patient safety at everylevel of operation, and thislatest advancement helps toensure accuracy in medicationdispensing and administration,”said Binkley.Maury Regionaloffers healthanalysis tool toarea employersMaury Regional Medical Center offers an employeehealth analysis tool for organizations throughoutsouthern Middle Tennessee to help improve thehealth of their workforce. The program was designed by Applied HealthAnalytics, Inc. based upon nationally acceptedstandards of health assessment and medical research, which has demonstrated a direct link betweencosts and individual health risks. Cancer Centerenhances technologyIn March, the Cancer Center enhanced technology with the addition of image-guidedradiotherapy (IGRT) for cancer. Radiation oncologists Michael Sattasiri, M.D., andJoel Kochanski, M.D., now treat patients using the powerful new Trilogy linearaccelerator and imaging system from Varian Medical Systems, which make it possibleto deliver a wide range of ultra-precise cancer treatments with great speed.the tumor, and an On-Board Imager devicefor fast, accurate, real-time tumor tracking andautomated patient positioning.“This state-of-the-art system makes it possiblefor us to treat patients with the most advancedradiotherapy techniques, using the mostclinically efficient processes in the world,”said Dr. Sattasiri. “It provides us with moreversatility and precision than we’ve ever had forcustomizing treatments.”At the core of the Trilogy system is a highpoweredmedical linear accelerator, a machinethat rotates around the patient to deliverradiation treatments from nearly any angle.A high-precision system also incorporates amulti-leaf collimator for shaping the radiationbeam to match the three-dimensional shape ofThe Trilogy system also includes cone-beam CTimaging technology to acquire a high-quality3-D image of the tumor and surroundinganatomy. During treatment, there are changesthat occur in the position of the tumor due tonormal physiological processes. By using 3-D CTimaging, physicians are able to make positioningadjustments and treat tumors with an enhancedlevel of accuracy, while sparing the healthysurrounding tissue.“The extraordinary power and flexibility of theTrilogy system assures us that we can delivera treatment plan that gives our patients thebest and most appropriate treatment possible,”said Dr. Kochanski. “By combining the mostpowerful radiotherapy treatment machine withhigh-quality imaging, tracking and monitoringdevices, Trilogy allows us to deliver the mostaccurate treatments possible in the shortestamount of time. That translates to betteroutcomes along with greater patient comfort, since patients spend less time on the treatmenttable.”—6—

New pacemakerdesigned for MRIenvironmentThe Heart Center at Maury Regional Medical Center is the second hospital in MiddleTennessee to utilize a new pacemaker that allows patients to safely have magnetic resonanceimaging (MRI) studies. The first procedure using this progressive technology was conducted atthe medical center on March 7, 2011 by Kevin Maquiling, M.D., an interventional cardiologiston the medical staff.“MRI is frequently used for patients with spineand disk disease, orthopedic injuries and vasculardisease. Many of our patients have avoided MRIstudies because of the potential that the imagingprocedure could interfere with the effectiveoperation of their pacemaker. It’s important to us tooffer the latest technology, which gives our patientsmore options,” said Maquiling.MRI scanners may cause traditional pacemakersto misinterpret MRI-generated electrical noise andwithhold pacing therapy or deliver unnecessarypacing therapy. The Revo MRI pacing system, when programmed into SureScan mode prior to anMRI scan, is designed to be used safely in the MRIenvironment. The Heart Center is operated in cooperation withVanderbilt University Medical Center. Heart servicesinclude cardiac evaluation and risk assessment, interventional procedures, cardiac defibrillatorand pacemaker procedures, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery and cardiac rehabilitation.—8—

New hip replacement surgeryJonathan Pettit, M.D., is among the first in Middle Tennessee to utilize the anteriorapproach to hip replacement, performing the procedure at Maury Regional MedicalCenter.During total hip replacement, the ball and socket ofthe hip joint are surgically replaced with implants, which may be made from a variety of materialsincluding metal, ceramic, and/or polyethylene, amedical-grade plastic. Traditionally, the surgeonmakes an incision along the buttock or side of theleg to access the hip joint. The anterior approach to total hip replacementis an alternative ativto traditional tional hipreplacementsurgery that provides the potential for less pain, faster recovery ery and improved mobility. ity.Using thisapproach, the surgeon makes a smaller incision onthe front of the leg.“Unlike traditional hip replacement surgery, thistechnique allows the surgeon to work betweenthe muscles and tissues without detaching themfrom either the hip or thigh bones,” said Dr. Pettit.“Patients who are candidates for this procedureare likely to benefit by having a shorter recoverytimesince keymuscles are notdetached using thistechnique,” said Dr. Pettit.
