Pharmacy implements system toenhance patient safetyThe Maury Regional Medical Center Pharmacyimplemented a new automated inventorymanagement system designed to enhance patientsafety through the use of barcode technology.“Because we want to offer every patient thehighest quality of care every day, our medicalcenter has made a commitment to provideadditional safety for medication administration,”said Pharmacy Director Jeff Binkley, PharmD.“We partnered with Swisslog to implement aninnovative approach to packaging and inventorymanagement to enhance accuracy, efficiency andflexibility for dispensing medications.”The revolutionary Beacon system offerspharmacies the ability to better organizemedications, track real-time utilization andinventory and further advance patient safety. When orders for patients are sent to thepharmacy, they are entered into the computersystem. A pharmacy staff member then uses a—4—
color-coded dcomputer stationtiand accompanying scanner tolocate the medication in thepharmacy. To complete theorder, the staff member thenuses a scanner to read thebarcode on the medication. If the wrong medication isselected, the light on the storageunit begins to blink, a visualdisplay message alerts themthat the wrong product wasselected, and the computer willnot allow them to complete theorder. In most cases, a photoof the medication is displayedon screen as an added securitymeasure.A high-speed packager worksin conjunction with the systemand holds 320 canisters of fastmovingmedications at a time. The system will package andbarcode hundreds of unit andmulti-unit doses in minutes, thus saving the pharmacists’time and increasing patientsafety.“Maury Regional is dedicatedto patient safety at everylevel of operation, and thislatest advancement helps toensure accuracy in medicationdispensing and administration,”said Binkley.Maury Regionaloffers healthanalysis tool toarea employersMaury Regional Medical Center offers an employeehealth analysis tool for organizations throughoutsouthern Middle Tennessee to help improve thehealth of their workforce. The program was designed by Applied HealthAnalytics, Inc. based upon nationally acceptedstandards of health assessment and medical research, which has demonstrated a direct link betweencosts and individual health risks.
