New pacemakerdesigned for MRIenvironmentThe Heart Center at Maury Regional Medical Center is the second hospital in MiddleTennessee to utilize a new pacemaker that allows patients to safely have magnetic resonanceimaging (MRI) studies. The first procedure using this progressive technology was conducted atthe medical center on March 7, 2011 by Kevin Maquiling, M.D., an interventional cardiologiston the medical staff.“MRI is frequently used for patients with spineand disk disease, orthopedic injuries and vasculardisease. Many of our patients have avoided MRIstudies because of the potential that the imagingprocedure could interfere with the effectiveoperation of their pacemaker. It’s important to us tooffer the latest technology, which gives our patientsmore options,” said Maquiling.MRI scanners may cause traditional pacemakersto misinterpret MRI-generated electrical noise andwithhold pacing therapy or deliver unnecessarypacing therapy. The Revo MRI pacing system, when programmed into SureScan mode prior to anMRI scan, is designed to be used safely in the MRIenvironment. The Heart Center is operated in cooperation withVanderbilt University Medical Center. Heart servicesinclude cardiac evaluation and risk assessment, interventional procedures, cardiac defibrillatorand pacemaker procedures, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery and cardiac rehabilitation.—8—
