Accomplishments and AdvancementsCANCERSERVICESThe Cancer Center added newtechnology to enhance theprecision of radiation therapyfor cancer patients this pastyear. The Varian® On-BoardImager® (OBI) makes dynamictargeting image-guidedradiation therapy (IGRT) moreefficient and convenient.The system delivers improvedtumor targeting using highresolution, low dose digitalimaging in the treatment room.By having the best possibleimage information, physiciansand staff are able to make timelydecisions and obtain exactalignment, which is criticalwhen delivering high dosesof radiation. OBI providesthe tools to manage changesin position caused by set-upconditions as well as changesin position during a patient’streatment session because ofnormal respiratory and organmotion. This enables physicians and staff to confidentlymanage patients and target movement—both before andduring treatments.OBI is the latest tool added for radiation treatment ofcancer and complements intensity modulated radiationtherapy (IMRT) and brachytherapy. In addition, theMaury Regional Cancer Center was the first in the stateto utilize the Dose Verification System® for the treatmentof breast cancer and is accredited by the Commission onCancer of the American College of Surgeons.—6—
HEART SERVICESMRMC has continued to advance its heart services. Themedical center has received full three-year accreditationwith Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) fromthe Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), havingadvanced its chest pain center accreditation fromLevel II to Level III—the highest level attainable. Inaddition, the medical center also attained heart failureaccreditation from the SCPC following a stringentreview.MRMC provides a comprehensive array of cardiacservices, including interventional procedures toopen blockages, electrophysiology services such aspacemakers and defibrillators, and cardiothoracicsurgery through a partnership with Vanderbilt Heartthat includes off-pump procedures.The time it takes for a patient to go from the EmergencyDepartment to the catheterization lab at MRMC—commonly referred to in health care as door-to-balloontime—is nearly half the nationally recommended90 minutes. In addition to traditional interventionalprocedures in which the catheter to open a blockedvessel is inserted in the leg, the physicians on themedical staff also perform transradial procedures inwhich the catheter is inserted through the wrist, whichoffers patients who qualify the ability to be back ontheir feet almost immediately and resume most normalactivities the next day.Surgical procedures include bypass surgery, includingoff-pump procedures, transmyocardial laserrevascularization in which laser channels are createdinto the heart muscle enabling new blood vessels toform, minimally invasive valve surgery, and the Mazeprocedure which is a highly complex surgical treatmentoption for atrial fibrillation.—7—
