How can students appeal Appeals lodged must be handed to the Head Teacher responsible for the subject on the form prescribed in this booklet. These forms must be handed in on the first day of attendance after the closing date for the task. [Forms are available from all Head Teachers, your Year Adviser and the Board of Studies representative (Mrs Chapman-Hardy for 2011).] The Head Teacher Administration (Mrs Chapman-Hardy), will request the formation of the Appeals panel, consisting of the Deputy Principal and Board of Studies representative. The school’s Assessment Appeals Panel will consider the evidence and decide whether to: • Grant an extension of time for the assessment task, without any penalty; • Grant an extension of time, with reduced marks; • Permit a substitute assessment task to be set; • Confirm the mark, zero or otherwise, which the teacher has already given; or • Award an estimate, based on other evidence. NOTE: i) There is no ground for appeal against the value of the mark given. ii) The Year Adviser will maintain a file of all appeals lodged. iii) Medical Certificates are expected in cases of absences through illness. Change to Pattern of Study (Subjects/Courses/Units) Any change to the pattern of study undertaken by a student must be carefully planned with the Year Adviser. The first step for a student wishing to change their pattern of study is to collect an ‘Application to Change to Pattern of Study (Subjects/Courses/Units)’ form from the Year Adviser. It is important that the student continues to meet commitments for all courses until the change requested receives final approval from the Principal. For example, it is not acceptable to stop attending a course simply because a request to drop the course has been lodged. Serious difficulties can arise if the proposed change is not approved and the student has not been meeting commitments for that course assuming the proposed change would be approved. ‘Application to Change to Pattern of Study (Subjects/Courses/Units) form. The guidelines and course assessment information provided here will ensure students have access to essential advice on their assessment programs. Senior Studies Information – Year 11 2011 1. Award of the Higher School Certificate requires the study of a minimum of 12 units in the Preliminary Course and a minimum of 10 units in the HSC Course. Both the Preliminary Course and the HSC Course must include the following: at least 6 units from Board Developed Courses including at least 2 units of a Board Developed Course in English; at least three courses of 2 units value or greater; at least four subjects. At most, 6 units of courses in Science can contribute to Higher School Certificate eligibility. 2. Study can be either full time or part-time. Students can pursue pathways, which means they have up to 5 years to accumulate respectively their Preliminary and HSC Records of Achievement. Students can repeat courses. Full time Year 11 students are required to attempt at least 12 units of study, consistent with the pattern outlined in (1) above. 3. Each subject is divided into two phases – the Preliminary Course (the part of the course which is attempted initially; generally the course studied in Year 11) and the HSC Course (the course attempted once the Preliminary Course has been satisfactorily completed; generally the course studied in Year 12). 4. University entrance is based on the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). If a student wishes to receive the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), he/she must study a minimum of 10 Board Developed HSC units. 5. School organisation has been structured to ensure that students meet the time requirements of each of their Board of Studies syllabi (120 indicative hours for each 2 unit course and 60 indicative hours for each 1 unit course, in each of the Preliminary and Higher School Certificate years). The Preliminary (Year 11) components of each course, including the Yearly Examination, will have concluded by the end of Term 3. This means that, provided students have completed Preliminary Course requirements satisfactorily, Higher School Certificate studies will commence from the beginning of Term 4, 2011. 6. Students are only permitted to change subjects in the first four weeks of Term 1, provided the change is in the student’s best interest and all previous necessary class work and homework can be completed. The Preliminary phase of study only extends for the first three terms of the year, so permitting later course changes would seriously disadvantage incoming students to new courses. 7. Some senior students may have a different pattern of day-time attendance from the junior school. Courses may begin from 7.30am; others are being provided through Maitland Schools Network, TAFE, and other providers. Consequently some students may start and/or finish outside the routine 9am to 3.25pm school day. Students who do not have scheduled lessons at the beginning and end day are not required to attend at those times. However to be allowed a late arrival or early departure the student must complete a VOR (variation of routine) form and have such an attendance pattern authorised. 8. Year 11 progress reports will be provided on two occasions. Reports towards the end of Term 2 will consist of an assessment rank and a comment for each course. A full yearly report will be distributed in Term 4. Upon satisfactory completion of their Preliminary courses, students are awarded an official Board of Studies Record of Achievement.
