<strong>1958</strong> Awards<br />
recorded on the students' permanent records and in the<br />
catalogue. To receive departmental honors, students<br />
must:<br />
a. Have an index of 2.2 in an aggregate of all courses<br />
taken in the major department.<br />
b. Pass a comprehensive examination in the major field.<br />
c. Satisfy any departmental requirements, such as engaging<br />
in seminars or individual directed study,<br />
in<br />
submitting an essay, etc.<br />
d. Be recommended by the department.<br />

The following awards are bestowed annually:<br />
THE BATES PRIZE, founded in 1905 by Edward Bayley Bates<br />
the Class of 1898 in memory of Rev. Laurence Webster Bates,<br />
of<br />
D.D., is a gold medal awarded to the member the graduating<br />
of<br />
class who has made the best record during his undergraduate<br />
course as college man.<br />

THE MARY WARD LEWIS PRIZE, founded in 1920 by the<br />
Browning Literary Society in honor of the of the second<br />
wife<br />
President of the College, is a gold medal awarded to the member<br />
of the graduating class who has made the best record during her<br />
undergraduate course as a college woman.<br />
THE JOHN A. ALEXANDER MEDAL, founded in 1920 by the<br />
Class of 1917 in memory of John A. Alexander, a member of the<br />
Class of 1917 who died in World War J, is a gold medal awarded<br />
to the member of the graduating class who has made the best<br />
record in athletics.<br />
THE LYNN F. GRUBER MEDAL, founded in 1925 by the Black<br />
White Club as a memorial to Lynn Gruber of the Class<br />
and F.<br />
of 1926, is given for proficiency in extracurricular activities.<br />
THE ADELAIDE ERICHS WATSON PRIZE, established by her<br />
husband, Dr. Harry G. Watson of the Class of 1889, given to<br />
is<br />
a member of the graduating class for excellence in Home Economics.<br />
THE UNITED STATES HISTORY AWARD, established through<br />
a bequest of Mr. H. Peyton Gorsuch for students excelling in<br />
United States History, was founded to increase interest in the<br />
historical background of the American nation.<br />
